- Savio D415 contributionsBetter than Gulmarg and SonamargGulmarg and Sonamarg are too touristy. Doodhpathri is like heaven on earth. Pristine, untouched beauty. We went there in the first week of March. It was covered by a thick blanket of snow. The Pony union guys stopped all vehicles around 5 kms before the point and quoted around 2000 per pony. We bargained them down to 900. They claimed that the vehicle could not go further due to snow, but it was a lie. We regretted our decision of taking the pony though as the walk is very pleasant here along a straight road - remember its 5 kms each way, so you may get tired. But we do understand we need to support the local economy. There were barely 30 tourists and around 200 pony guys, so they would get a chance only after 2-3 days. Feeling bad for them, we took the pony. Remember the bargaining happens with the union representative. I think the person who accompanies you with the horse gets a fixed price, ensure you tip them well (they are poor hardworking people). After a 5 km walk on the pony, we reached the parking lot. The pony could not go any further. Here there were guys who were offering snowmobiles (snow scooter). They were charging 2000 per person. We tried to bargain, but they were arrogant. Said that its a totally 8 km distance - which we later found out was a lie. The parking lot point was so pristine in its beauty. One can have maggie at the parking lot. The guys with our horses kept accompanying us saying that the union will shout at them if we are left alone since there are wild animals around. They did not leave us even though we came back walking on foot and accompanied us on their horses right back to the place where the union had stopped all cars/Visited March 2022Written 7 March 2022
- ShirazvastaniPune, India43 contributionsMost beautiful place around srinagarIt is the most beautiful place for a day trip from srinagar. A two hour drive. The car can go right upto the entrance point to the river. There is a 150 rupees toll that one has to pay. Also, the horses union will not let the car pass and will insist on taking ponies. We did not want to take horses so we just paid then rs. 500 to let us through. We also tipped our driver who helped in convincing the horse union. The scenic beauty around the flowing river is mersmerising. On the way back we had makke ki roti and sarson ka saag which was very tasty. Do not miss this tripVisited October 2022Travelled with familyWritten 26 October 2022
- Vibhor ManglaZirakpur, India53 contributionsVisited in WinterNot a good time to visit in Winter because driver will drop you 10 km before Doodhpathri and you have to take horses to see the view points which is nothing but covered with snow all over. Drivers does not carry chain for the tyres. Locals also suggests that we should have visited in Summer only.Visited January 2021Written 9 January 2021

Cars aren't allowed beyond the main gate which leads to the meadow. Beyond this you can walk/ take a pony ride/ ride an ATV. We chose to walk and that was the best decision we took. It only takes 29 mins, and the views from the meadow to the river are mesmerizing. The weather was pleasant with a slight chill and the river was also a sight to behold, with some hot kahva from a stall along the banks being the cherry on top. Make sure you wear comfortable footwear though.

Around 70 kms from Srinagar and a 2 hour journey brings you to this beautiful destination from parking to go upto the river you can either walk hire a pony or be a pillion rider on an electric vehicle charges are negotiable they start with 4000 and settle for 12 to 15 hundred depending upon demand and supply and your negotiation skills
I choose to be the pillion rider and thoroughly enjoyed the journey the view and experience by the side of the river was memorable
There is a Hi Speed resort on the way from parking to the river where one can get tea coffee snacks and meals it also has a wifi accommodation is also available at a reasonable price it has parking one can only bring your vehicle to the resort if you show booking to the horse owner goons otherwise they can damage the vehicle

This is undoubtedly a hidden gem and the scenery is breathtaking. We made the mistake of hiring horses and guides for the three of us. We ordered and agreed the horses and price for one hour because our Kashmiri friends were waiting in the car park.
The guides ignored this and made us dismount and wait on our own without explanation on two occasions.
Just before the tour ended the guides stopped us to demand a tip and the whole experience was upsetting and a bit scary. We finally ended up paying double what was agreed and the guides were still demanding a tip as we left.
We love Kashmir and it’s people and always support local businesses where we can.
This was the low point of our trip to India and something that should be addressed because it could be a highlight.

Doodhpathri is a picturesque hidden gem of Kashmir which is only 44 km from airport. It's a surreal place at 8,957 ft with lush green meadow surrounded by Pir Panzal range & Shaliganga river is flowing through it.

I had visited with my family at Doodhpathri on dated 29th of June. It was a very pleasant experience. The valleys were worth seeing. The river point sight seeing was a very excellent experience. Must visit this place if going to Srinagar.

Good experience with open meadows and river areas with clean water. However, the very poor experience of Pony, unions, and taxi people who stop much before, and then Pony people charge anything and hard to bargain. Although, you can walk if you prefer and tablet to track 2-3 km.
It's harassment of tourists and not only at this place but the whole of Kashmir.

The Place is really is nice. Pony walles will ask you to go to shaliganga river by pony but you will have to convince ur driver to take you directly to the parking. While crossing the river dont jump and go safely. The water is really clean and looks as white as milk. As per me its a must visit

We really enjoyed the experience of doodhpathri.. When we went there it was really foggy due to the rains.. Our taxi driver went inside till Shaliganga river, so we didnt ride any pony here..We crossed the river bridge and trekked for around 40 minutes amongst the rocks and pine trees.. While coming back, the fog had cleared and we enjoyed the meadows with such a beautiful view and also took photos with the sheep that were grazing around. Also do not miss the chance to have makki ki roti and saag while coming back.

First of all the place is nice if not the best. The problem is reaching there because of certain self made laws of ponnywala/govt of not allowing own car/taxi till the final river point
First of all the ponnywalas (sledge walas at thajiwas) are by far the most notorious and harrasing people on this earth. They gather in crowd in front of your car and don't let cross saying no further entry and then they want to charge us to walk 3-4 km that's left. Such people spoil the entire experience and you have to negotiate and plan your further trip while some people brine govt officers and take the car till last point. Road is very much ok for car to go but it's the nexus of govt and these ponnywalas that wants to rob the tourists. I am sure govt is not blind and if they wish they can remove ponnywalas from all tourist spots by making roads till the last stop but may be the local unions and bribery is not letting that happen. Till that point I would rate kashmir as the worst tourist destination unless you want to shell out and can keep on negotiating with these notorious guys.
I ask govt, why can't they make roads and allow cars till the last spot. Doodhpathri is beautiful buy such things don't let you enjoy the spot.

Hello,
I will be visiting doodhpathri from Srinagar as a day trip. Due to some reasons, cannot take horse. So, it is possible to visit attractions like river without horse or much walking? Can we reach to the river by car?

You may take the car to the river..but you will need to check first. Its a good walk..if you can, use the time to explore on foot.

Hey, sorry for answering latet. I haven't been to Yusmarg. So I cannot give an appropriate comparative view. However, Doodhpathri is very close to Srinagar can be done in a very leisurely trip with a picnic lunch, some plates, spoons and a bedsheet to sit on. (Please re,e,ber to bring the plates and napkins back). The vast touristless expanse of Doodhpathri is extremely alluring and worth a visit.

Guide may not be required, as long as you are able to reach the place. At Doodthpatri, be ready for a good trek, unless you want to take a horse.
