Had a fantastic visit to Mata Vaishno Devi. Actually went there on a brainwave, deciding just 6 days before I went with my wife. Didn't have any booking on Helicopter and had decided to see how we can manage with horse or Palki. But took a chance on the day of the visit and got a Helicopter offline booking . The weather had cleared and the Heli ride was efficient and peaceful. Walked 2.5 kms from the Helipad to Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan. What a great peace of luck , even the Old Cave route was open and I had a thrilling visit for Mata Vaishno Devi Darshan.
Absolutely perfect.
Only be wary of the Pony ride or the Palki vendors, they will throng you, the moment you express even a hint of a desire to avail their services. But one good thing about Mata Vaishno Devi, is that the Shrine Board controls everything and therefore all rides are also regulated and there is fixed price and transparency.
Excellent Organization all through. Only the Cloak room for pilgrims near Gate no 2 & 3 is a long walk down and can be daunting for senior people. There is a paid cloak room at Durga Bhawan a little ahead, for mobiles and other expensive equipment.
Online Booking on Heli ride or Electric car ride from Ardhkunwari are booked 60 days in advance on the Shrine Board website. So are the rooms at Bhawan. You cant get this if you decide on short notice.
Plenty of Hotels though in Katra including the big chains. But some of the big names are a bit far from town.

It is best to start in the morning from Tarakote Marg. You will reach Adhkuwari at around Lunch time and from there you can go to Bhawan and will reach there by evening or night depending on how you go. Adhkuwari may be a bit smelly for you and food options can be limited so be mentally prepared. You can rest in the accommodation at Bhawan when you reach there and then you can do darshan at 2 or 3 in the night (NOT AFTERNOON). We did darshan at this time and we were done in 10-15 minutes with the CRPF slip, I am not sure how long the queue would be without any slip but shorter than normal. You can take a bath in the accommodation before taking darshan.
Best Tips and Tricks:
-Get a room at Katra rest for the day and start trekking the next day since it is very tiring
-Get a room for when you have returned from Bhawan in Katra as you will surely be exhausted.
-Get a room at Bhawan they are not too expensive and are a must for a Hygenic Darshan.
-Getting a Battery Car from Adhkuwari to Bhawan is also best; the views are scenic and you do not get tired too much.
-Book tickets in advance online and get it both ways for Battery.
-The New Tarakote Marg is better if you don't mind trekking a bit more as it is more peaceful and spacious. It also does not have any ponies or battery cars or palanquins just for foot.
-The old route to go to Adhkuwari is more of a vibe but I found it very smelly and packed.
-Get the Ropeway from Bhawan to Bharaonath as it is way better than trekking all the way there. Get it for both ways and also preferably get the first slot in the morning.
-Be prepared to meet the crowd at Bhairo Baba as it is packed with pilgrims.
-As mentioned before getting a room in advance at Bhawan is better and that too way in advance online. Do this before booking the battery, etc. Trust me it is difficult to get free bedding there and impossible to get rooms there on the spot.
-There is a McDonald's on the New Tarakote Marg (before Tarakote Langar if you are going from Katra to Adhkuwari and after Tarakote Langar if you are going from Adhkuwari to Katra) where you can get only softies but it is worth it.
- It is also wonderful if you get a stick in Katra you can find men selling them on the streets they are cheap and just made of wood and you can get your money back if you return them in Katra. They are of great help!
-If you have rented accommodation in Bhawan then leave everything except for the Prashad there only. Nothing is allowed during darshan especially not phones, wallets, belts, shoes, sticks, nothing.
-After darshan, you can rest a bit and then take the Ropeway to Bhairon Baba.
-They don't allow sticks so either keep them in your room or they will collect them before entry. After coming back you can take any random stick from there itself for free.
- After the darshan of Bhairo Baba you will start coming back towards the darbar. You will see a road going upwards so just where that road starts there is a big shopping complex thing. There you can try the Sagar Ratna Restaurant. I loved the food there. It was affordable and so delicious!
Have a safe trip and Jai Mata Di!

Very tedious and strenuous. Extremely clean and well maintained. Feels Safe and secure. Too much crowed .
The systems are very good. Crowd unmanageable. Need better crowd management with more discipline. Darshan is just 2-3 seconds only.

Blessings, Blessings, Blessings – The Perfect Darshan at Vaishnodevi Shrine.
The Journey starts at 22:15hrs from Katra where we have parked our vehicle. At the outset whoever visit the temple must take the Electronic Admission Card at near to bus stand in Katra, Without the card nobody can enter in through the security gate. Hence do not forget to collect the card sometime they might provide it near security gate but they sometime deny for the same.
Now the frisking at main gate that is for the security reason for the temple but it is tensed and serious. So make sure not to carry anything written on the board either you will be stopped to enter inside again.
The Journey from Katra Security gate to Vaishno Devi Temple is around 12Kms trekking not basically trekking it is a safe and easy walk way and stairs too which are for short cuts, For those who have stamina and want to reach early.
On the way Ardhkuari is around 7Kms where the holy cave is located, Legend says Mata Vaishnodevi stayed inside the cave for 9 months and meditated. You need to collect entering slip and there will be always a big waiting list which will take 3-4 hours of waiting or may be longer than that. So my suggestion is to take entering slip and visit Vaishnodevi Temple and Bhairvnath Temple first and then coming back you can visit Ardhkuari and you will get to enter the holy cave what we did during our journey to Vaishnodevi.
We reached the Vishnodevi Temple around 04:00hrs in the hour of early morning we took bath and completed the Darshan at 04:15hrs the best time according to hindu rituals.
After Vaishnodevi Darshan we started our journey to Bhairavnath Temple and reached around 05:25 after Bhairavnath Temple we came down towards Vaishnodevi instead of coming other way and visited Ardhkuari Cave around 10:30hrs which was such a bliss.
Reached back at Katra around 12:00Hrs took bath at Holy bathing place near security gate and started our journey back.
Important Points :- Thanks to J&K Goverments they have provided best of the facilities here possible. Also it is not like other shrines in India where everywhere people are seating and charging for the Puja, Which is the best thing I Have seen. Also the Drinking water facilities & Washroom facilities every 500 meters are placed. Food pricing has been barred by the Shrine Board so nobody can loot extra money from anybody. Also the hawker who sells Prasad has the rate list and if they charge more you have so many Shrines shops where you can buy Prasad on appropriate cost.
The Perfect Indian Temple I have visited till date.

Vaishno Devi Mandir is one of the best holiest places in India. I recommend you to go vaishno devi from the period August to March because the mandir is too high from the Katra and has approx 19 km. So in tracking to the Bhavan, I recommend you start the track at 11 am in the morning and hope you come directly to Bhavan at 6 pm. If you want to go bharo baba bhavan through Trolly whose price is Rs 100 per person then reach Bhavan before 5 pm.

We reached katra 16th June, early morning (6 a.m.) by train. We obtained the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) equipped Yatra card tag at the railway station itself. After checking into a nearby hotel, we freshened up and had our breakfast by 9 a.m.
We took an Auto, and he charged us around Rs. 210 to take us to Tarakote Marg. Tarakote Marg is the new trekking path to the shrine. It was a sunny day, a bit hot at Katra, and Tarakote Marg had shelter covering the entire track all the way. At every few corners (change in direction), shelter was provided for a short distance. RFID can be obtained at the Tarakote marg entry point. We saw a very less crowd around 9am in the morning to obtain the RFID. Though we have already obtained it, we just observed the facilities at the entry point.
At 8:50 a.m., we (groups of three friends) started the trek. We started well, were able to cover 2km, and took a rest for 7-8 minutes. We continued in a similar way, like every 1.5km or 2km, had a break for 7-8 minutes, and we did this till all the way up to Bhavan, 14km. We paced the walking quite well and had enough breaks. By doing so, we reached the shrine at 1 p.m.
Tarakote has very few good restaurants and a few eateries every 2km. Toilets are also available within 2–3 kilometers. It was quite safe and less crowded.
We are able to get the shrine board locker (free), for which we wait for 15-20 minutes. After keeping the things safe (all electronic gadgets and bags), we were in the queue for darshan. Within an hour, we were able to complete the darshan with ease.
After having our lunch in one of the restaurants at Bhavan, we started trekking back to Katra at 3.30 pm and around 6.45 pm, with very few breaks.

After Amarnath darshan we moved from Pohelgam to katra . It took almost whole day to reach Katra .Our hotel was booked well in aadvance . After refreshning ourselves our foremost job was to change money . Like other cities at Katra there is no money changing facility and our credit card also was not working . So we had to postpone our visit next day . We went to Jammu next morning and changed money then came back . At Amarnath we had along ride on horse . So we decided to go by helicopter . In the early morning around 2 am we went to nearly heli booking office to join the queue . After 5 hours we got booking . After that we went heli pad . But waiting hours after hours there is no flight because of bad weather .hence we decided to move on horse . The whole entry gate was crowded. We got our reffered horseman who were with my brothers before one month . We started at 09 am . The road was good and considerably wide . It had tin shades for protection of rain and sun.All along the road there are shops and food stalls. People were seen taling their little children in parambulator. The line of visitors continue 24 hours. As one approaches the temple there are few checkpost .The area is highly secured . At horse dropping point there is space for vaults to keep camera mobile etc . after keeping your things again there is walk of 40/50 minutes .crossing lot of twists and turns we could have darshan of Mata Vaishnodevi . This is a temple which gives you some holy souvenir .

My parents are visiting vaishnodevi. They have a battery car booking at 7 PM in evening. I was just wondering how will they go to bhairo ghati since they are senior citizens . Does ropeway works past 7 pm also or any other way to go for bhairo baba darshan.

Sir - thanks for the detailed writeup. Had one question - I am told it takes about 5/6 hrs one way for the walk between Banganga till the Bhawan, which means if one doesnt have a place to stay after darshan, they have to come back same day - with total 12 + hrs of walk. Did you also do the same ?
Any private accommodation available at Ardhkuwari if rooms are not available at Bhawan ?

Hi, My parents are visiting Vaishno devi in 1st week of Oct 2024.
I got Battery car tickets from Bhawan to Ardhkuwari.
My questions is - can they easily get Palkhi/Doli from Ardhkuwari to Katra? Or is it hard to get Doli from Midway?
Due to their age they can not walk that 6 km.
Written 1 August 2024
Battery car is available from Ardhkuwari to Bhawan and vice versa (not from Katra). I just booked it thru their official website.

Are there any conveyance option from Katra to Ardhkuwari? My elderly parents won't be able to travel via pony/palki. I am hoping if some battery runs via new route till Ardhkuwari?
