What a fantastic hidden gem! This place has an outside running train trip lasting about 20 minutes going around the park. On the inside are thousands of toy train artifacts in several different scales. The guide is a wealth of information about everything related to railroading and toy trains. There is a large O gauge layout with several trains which he explains and runs. There is a HUGE HO layout with 5 or 6 trains running simultaneously. He has a Z scale layout in a box. All visits are guided tours, and he can make it a 30 minute tour or a 2 hour tour or more depending on your time constraints and interests. As a model railroader myself, this place is a can't miss gem!

This is a treasure! The staff was informative, the displays well thought out and incredibly detailed. They have something set up in just about every gauge, and there’s something new everywhere you look! The train ride was very nice. The people working there were extremely kind to my 2 year old grandson, and he had so much fun, he wanted to go back every day of our stay in NM. We will definitely visit often.

Our family of four adults and three kids 4 to 12 years of age visited this run down little museum and train ride. What a gem! While the $5 two mile train ride was fun, the best part was the small but packed museum inside. There were at least four different train layouts and hundreds of old train cars and engines. Lots of history and an extremely friendly and knowledgeable young man who worked in the museum. It's too bad this is a good hour from I-10 in Almogordo but it was worth the drive.

Limited operating hours are posted. Beware! My family and I made a special trip to this depot and were turned away on Saturday, 2/22/14. The cashier stated they stop tours at 3pm. The website says 4pm. So, either update your site or retrain your staff on customer service. We arrived at 3:30pm. If you're in desperate need of revenue, why are you turning it away? What a joke! This was a waste of time. To top it off, I had to listen to smart aleck remarks from two men who were surfing the internet in the next room. Treat your customers right. What's the matter with you? I will not return and will not recommend this place to family and friends.

My husband and I visited this small museum while staying in Alamogordo during a vacation in southern New Mexico. My husband and I really like trains and my husband loves to collect things, including model trains. Although small, the museum has a variety of train layouts that are interesting to see, including one that is quite large. In addition, there are alot of train cars, pictures and other railroad memorabilia. Upon entering the museum, we were greeted by a slightly sullen man who directed us to a room and said a tour guide would meet us. Our tour guide was an older gentleman who turned out to be rather rude and tried to keep us hostage in this place. He quizzed us on our train and history knowledge by pointing out various things in the rooms. He tried to be funny at times, but came across as cynical and unpleasant. Luckily, my husband who is smarter than I, could figure out some of the things this man was talking about, but much of it went over my head. We were eventually able to slip away when another couple entered the room and he began explaining things to them. My husband and I are easy going people but this experience was one of the strangest I have had at an attraction. This guy needs to retire or work on his attitude if he is going to tour people around this place. The exhibits are okay, but rather tired looking and everything is placed rather haphazardly. Outside is a small train that is used to tour people around a large park. No one was riding the train when we were there and another gentleman was working on the engine. None of the staff came across as very enthusiastic about trains or this museum. The park the train ran through which is next door to the museum is not very appealing.
For train enthusiasts, this might be worth a stop if in the immediate area, especially to look at the model railroad layouts. There is an admission fee which I believe was $6.00 and the museum has limited hours. There is an extra charge for the train ride. I would not make a special trip to come to this museum though. I wish we would have skipped it and spent more time at the Space museum or gone to another attraction.

When we walked into the Toy Train Depot, we walked into a little train store. There are some really cute train items you can buy. When you pay the $5.00 per person admission fee you can go into the train museum. The museum is divided up into rooms by scale. There is HO scale, N scale, etc. Each room is "conducted" by a different person and the displays are all accurate.
There is also a larger train out front for the kids to ride on for a fee. It runs around the park. One of the rooms had a lot of historical information. Most of the museum is ran by volunteers. The only thing I really had to say against it, and I even hate saying it, but we really wanted to look at what was on display. My husband is really into model railroading and we LOVE to read, but there was one volunteer who wouldn't leave us alone long enough so that we could look and read. We finally just left. I know he was just trying to be helpful, and I think maybe he was just lonely, but sometimes a museum is meant for people to explore some things on their own. (Again, I really hate to say this.) I would have probably given this a four star if it wasn't for that.

The train depot in Alamogordo, New Mexico is not much to look at from the outside. But what an amazing place inside. Any model train enthusiast will be amazed as to what is to be found there. This original Union Pacific train station houses a huge collection along with several layouts. An added bonus is a fun train ride (1/5th scale) around the city park that can be enjoyed by any age. It is well worth supporting this traditional hobby that is being kept alive by very friendly volunteers.

Just an interesting place! Lots of toy trains & the people there have lots of stories to tell you. The building is over 100 years old. It was an old train depot moved to this location. There is also a mini train you can ride for $ 3.00. Museum is $5.00 each person.

I have never seen so many scale model trains in my life. Several operating displays and the staff is great here. Worth a visit.

While we got there just before closing (and so didn't have the chance to look inside the store) my wife and I were able to take a ride on the toy train through the park. It was a cute experience that lasted around 10 minutes, but my wife really enjoyed the elderly gentleman that ran the train, especially when he started singing "I've been working on the railroad"...priceless.

The train ride is $4.00 for adults, and $3.00 for children. But I don't remember what the admission fee was. But do remember that it was not very expensive for what is in there.
