The road along the beach is filled with restaurants and agencies. The piers are the really interesting part. It is filled with sea lions lounging on the benches, iguanas lazing everywhere, pelicans and frigate birds fighting over scraps. In the water, you often see sharks, rays, sea turtles and sea lions. A cool place to wander.

A busy place with lots of traffics but also a wonderful place to watch the boats coming in and out, together with sea lions and birds.

We truly enjoyed wondering around the waterfront each night, as the nightlife was pretty cool, with many restaurants, bars, and gift shops all around. There were also plenty of animals and fish around the port, including some very neat sea lions!

Walk the waterfront and experience everything! Imagine a day on Mulberry Street. From bars, fish markets shops and my favorite the infamous water taxis that transport people and luggage to the outlying boats. Select your favorite bar or cafe, linger, get into the Galápagos groove, and experience the islands.

A walk along the 'Malecon' is to walk along the main street adjacent to the sea, with restaurants, jewelry shops, tourist gift stores, holiday accommodation, tour agents and the like facing the sea. With the inter-island boats collecting and offloading passengers, water taxis form the vital link to the larger speed boats and to the beach and hotel area to the east of the bay. The local sea inhabitants take precedence over bench seats and form the 'sea lion' photo attraction. Elsewhere iguanas sun themselves away from the daily hustle. The skate board park provides for local sport activity, including volley ball and evening music, providing the opportunity for social gatherings. Taxis park up waiting for their next fair, although if you stay close to this area they aren't really needed to access the general tourist activities, which are mostly within walking distance.

Like all island towns, the center of attraction is a stroll along the harbor and this is no exception. Plenty of restaurants, and, of course, souvenir shops, to go along with the tourists. Quite calm during the day, it picks up after 7:00 when everyone is out and about. We spent 3 nights in Puerto Ayora and loved it. Most shops and restaurants closed during mid-day.

You can take a water taxi to go to the beaches near Puerto Ayora or to snorkel a little bit outside the pier. Close to the pier you will also find a lot of restaurants, stores, and gift shops for all budgets.

The Malecon is very short as they go, but sleeping at one end means a lot of time walking everywhere. I suggest the center or closer to Baltra Ave and Charles Darwin Blvd. Tons of eats and shopping. NOTHING IS CHEAP. Be sure to go out to the ranch turtle sanctuary for a full day with 40-50 very very large turtles, nice deck to relax, great coffee, snacks. You do NOT need a tour. You can take a local bus or a taxi, and same to return, although there is a long long entry driveway covered with growth which is part of the pleasure, with egrets, tortugas and cows all along that path. Lovely for a full day!

A great place for a stroll at any time of the day. Well worth a visit to the fish market to see the sealions and pelicans waiting for their share. Lots of shops selling good quality crafts and t-shirts and plenty of excellent bars and restaurants.

Puerto Ayora is a small place, along Charles Darwin street, there is a nice walkway that takes in a touristy section of town plus the marina, pier, and the fish market. Lots of critters, sea lions, iguana, turtles, birds. No need to grab a taxi, the walk is great! I might add that the malecon stretches from the pier and marina about halfway to the Charles Darwin Center.
