When I heard about the number of steps I had to climb before I get to the top where the Christo Rei is, I was a bit discouraged but I challenged myself and went up the steps, I'm glad I did because the view from the top was great. Please visit early in the morning or late afternoon because the sun can be punishing. Good exercise and close to the beach.

It was a nice morning walk and the way to spend Saturday morning for a weekend in the middle of a business trip. On Saturdays you can actually join WHO-organized walks from Dili to Cristo Rei and back. Has to be really early morning as even at 8 am in February it was quite hot.

We took a 1/2 day tour of Dili and Cristo Rei was our final stop. This imposing statue overlooks the ocean and is reminiscent of Christ the Redeemer in Rio. You will need to climb stairs to get to the top, but you can take it at a leisurely pace and examine the Stations of the Cross engravings along the way. Also, the views out to the beaches on both sides are quite lovely: the busy, roadside beach on your left as you ascend, and the quieter beach on your right. Certainly a well known landmark in Dili, and a must-see.
