The plaza is a large space that has public events during the year. There are a number of sculptures by the famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero,
It is a popular gathering spot om weekends.
The disturbing history is that there was a terrorist attack in the plaza in the 90s, when a bomb that had been placed in a Botero sculpture - The Bird - exploded and killed or injured dozens of people,
Botero agreed to replace the sculpture, as long as the damaged piece remaimed. They sit side by side in the park.
It is a popular gathering spot om weekends.

The park itself is a bit rough, but the symbolic presence of the exploded statue is the true reason to visit. Read up on it and go take a look as a reminder of where the city has come from.

We took a real city tour of Medellin and it was well worth the time taken. The Parque San Antonio is a large space that has public events during the year, and was our last stop on the tour. It was very interesting and sad all in one, for in June 1995 a bomb was hidden in local artist Botero's Bird sculpture of a bird, and exploded killing 29 people, nobody was ever caught. But every extremist group from the rightest, leftists, and drug cartel all claimed they had planted it. When the city started to clean up the bomb-damaged bird, the artist told them to leave it as a memorial and he would donate a new one called " El Pajero de la Paz” which means “The Bird of the Peace”.
Today they sit side by side. There are a number of sculptures by the famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero, scattered around the park, along with the Iglesias San Antonio one of the oldest Catholic churches in Medellin. The park is a popular gathering spot for families at weekends.
Tip: Be aware that like most places in Colombia crime is down but pick-pockets thrive.

It is kind of dirty and cohabited by hobos but still it'll show you a place where many african-colombian locals like to hang out. It also has the original blown up Boteros bird and the new one, just to learn some history.

This was our last stop with Real City Tours. I would suggest the free tours because making a special trip here would be a bit of a let-down. But with the tour, you get some verbal context of what you're looking at.
The square does not seem to be busy, and are guide warned us it's a pick-pocket area. Something to keep in mind!

mi favorite place because San Antonio Park is known for its large paintings and for the number of tourists who visit it every day.I love it because it is a place where you can appreciate the real medellin and this church has one of the largest cupolas in the country I also like this place because you can see an old Medellin, its pigeons, its typical food sold in near restaurants makes us feel in a nice place full of fantasies, you can also see a great landscape.
I go to San antonio park many times, sometimes with my family, sometimes with friends, and sometimes alone when I walk the subway, and I like to go because it is a bohemian place which goes with my personality.
the activities that have are many, first you learn about a culture, second you know the cultures made years ago, third is a relaxed place, outdoors, you can also enter the museum of culture and look at more works.
and to finish in an indirect way is known the city from the past until now

Otherwise unremarkable yet look for the two Botero sculptures - one is a mangled bird blown to pieces but a political group, the other an exact replica. Botero donated the new one and asked for the damaged sculpture to remain to show how the city can and will transform to peace.

This is a neat plaza that has 4 Botero statues in it. The most famous or infamous is that of the pigeon that was blown up by the cartels and subsequently replaced by a twin. As well as the statues I also liked the grafitti on the various vendors “sheds” as well as on some of the walls.

As with so much of Colombia's tragic history, so went the bombing of a concert in this park. However, with the support of the mayor given a stiffer spine by Francisco Botero, the sculpture that was used as shrapnel now sits alongside a new sculpture - representing the awful history, but the hope for the future. For now, the park is used for civic events.
