A large producers market offering opportunities to look at the diversity of the country’s amazing fruits and vegetables products. Beautiful and certainly worth a stroll although you should note this is not a fancy place for tourists, just one where people work. It is however possible to buy small quantities. Coming from the city is ok but the walk from the metro is not through the nicest neighborhood, however although you’ll walk along “strange” people it didn’t look especially unsafe to us by day.

I LOVE a good market.. a real market, not a tourist market.. this is a real market where real Colombians come to buy just about everything.. fish, meat, herbs, vegetables, fruit, pots & pans, cooking oil... etc. It’s an enormous sprawling bustling busy crowded market.. and it’s perfect! It was the best part of our week long trip to Medellin. We tried to get into an “exotic fruit tour” but they didn’t have room for us.. you do not NEED to sign up for a tour.. just get in a taxi (recommended as the walk from the metro can be a little sketchy) and have them take you right to the front doors. We decided that for the price of the tour, we could just buy any piece of fruit that looked interesting, and that’s what we did. We arrived by 8am, and the place was hopping.. I mean crazy. Be conscious of where you are, and where people are pushing carts or carrying insane bags of produce, and get out of their way! Carry your belongings close to and in front of your body for safety, and don’t flash big money or jewelry around. Don’t give anyone an opportunity to want to target you. But with that warning I will add that I never once felt even remotely unsafe within this market.. being careful just makes good sense.

We talked to so many different vendors and to a person, every single one was willing to cut or crack open a fruit to let us try before we bought... showing us what was ripe, what was for eating and what was just for juice. Everyone was friendly and encouraging. Many wanted to practice speaking English, while we were practicing Spanish. We were often met with puzzled looks when we said we just wanted to buy “one” of something (since most people are buying great quantities), and often that one item we wanted would simply be given to us (we always managed to slip some coins to the vendor anyway).

We stopped for cafe con leche and empanadas at a little cafe in the heart of the market. The woman who served us was so wonderful and friendly and was explaining to us everything she was making.. hot chocolate, fish soup... etc. I sat next to an older, and obviously indigenous Colombian woman, who shared some stories with us. We would never have had such an experience had we taken a tour and been led around. One woman left her own stall to walk us 5 minutes into the heart of the market to look for pots and pans! When we left, the guys at the fish counters all waved and shouted their goodbyes.

We spend four incredible hours wandering through this market, trying and buying fruit, coffee, food, spices.. just soaking it all in. Don’t go if you’re in a rush.. really get in there and look around and take your time. It’s a wonderful place.

This market is amazing, but incredibly large and a bit intimidating when you come up to it from the outside. There are many many floors and sections to the market, and it is something you really should not miss if you are visiting Medellin! We felt completely safe here, but appreciated seeing it for the first time with a guide who could give us the history and help us understand the layout. Like another reviewer, I recommend going in the morning as the guide had told us many things will shut down after a certain time. We did the exotic fruit tour with Real City tours and highly recommend it. Great value for money, and the guide was amazing!!

2 things: don't try to get there from the metro- the walk is through dangerous areas, you must take a car directly there to avoid unsafe parts of the city. Also, we were there on a Thursday at 3pm and very few booths in the market were open, and it was not worth visiting at all. We have been to many markets around central america, and maybe it was just timing but this one did not impress in any form. We tried a couple interesting fruits, but we had seen most of those before, too.

Lots of real world local color here. Lots of activity. But don't go late in the afternoon because many things will be closed. Morning is probably the best time to go.

Why to travel so far and end up in a mall? Their is nothing better that enjoy the simple markets, where you can see the beautiful vegetables, fruits, spices and the people in their natural environment

Here’s the low down. Combine this with Plaza Botero and Museo Antioquia. Take the metro to Parque Berrio. Walk towards Minorista and check out the impromptu market below the metro. They sell the most random items: old tv remotes, old cell phone cases, batteries, haggard toys. Random. I did find a retro Simpsons hat and ms kitty hat.

Take a cab or Uber. It’s safe but confusing. Market has veggies fruits and staples. Head down stairs for best prices. I had brunch at one of the dozen small kitchens. Huevoes, plantains, and a cabbage salad with rice and beer cost $10k pesos or $3 usd.

Go on a Sunday. At the meet buy round trip tickets. Saturday would be too crowded.

Went to this market and found it to be very clean, with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables on sale. There are even places to eat here in the basement, and one particular place (Aqui para Lucho) was very nice, and had great local food.

The scale of the Plaza Minorista market can be intimidating but walking through the two floors of vendors is not to be missed. Extraordinary options and tropical fruits for sale at a fraction of what you’d pay in the US or EU. About 2500 venders in total! It was easy to walk through and look without being “hawked at”.

We took a tour but for a quick 30 minute exploration you could go on your own. Taking a taxi or the Metro to the metroplus Minorista station is recommended vs. walking. Apparently some of the neighborhoods close by can be a bit dodgy, although we thought the area right around the market seemed fine.
