Last year, I was very excited because I was going to travel to Medellin for the first time, it is one of my favorite cities. When I arrived in Medellín at night, I was very amazed by how beautiful the city is. We toured some important places in the city like the stadium, I was Fascinated with this place. We also went to La Piedra del Peñol, it is a very beautiful place but I was Frightened and worried because I'm afraid of heights. It was perhaps one of my best experiences although it only lasted two days due to the problem of the pandemic

We went to a match on which the Independiente Medellin and Deportivo Tachira (from Venezuela) played. The atmosphere was great with all the local fans. I cant even imagine how is their own "el clasico" -match going to be if on this match we had so good time.

Please notice that there is no ticket booth anywhere near stadium except a long search on the game day on which we found a small booth behind a metal fence surrounded by two policemen. It was located on the north east corner behind the stadium next to road.

Fantastic atmosphere and game. DIM against Cali. Last year we went to competition game of Nacional against Cali, also good atmosphere. Lots of salsa drums and singing. The away supporters are not allowed in Medellin, so it is perfectly safe to watch a football game here in this stadium. If you have the chance just do it! A ticket is 40K peso on oriental side. You can buy it on the same day at the ticket box in the stadium. Around are many sports accommodations, also nice to watch.

What Americans refer to as “Soccer” is called “Football” throughout the rest of the world. Colombians are crazy about football as is the rest of South American. The city of Medellín has two professional teams. Atletico Nacional is the most popular and successful one whose colors are white and green. Atletico was owned by Pablo Escobar during the height of his drug campaign. They have won several national and international championships. In fact, they were the opponent of Chapecoense, the Brazilian team that perished in a plane crash in 2016 on the way to play in the Copa Sudamericana Finals (Chapecoense was eventually awarded the title). Medellín’s “other team” is known as Deportivo Independiente Medellín and their colors are red and blue. While Independiente Medellín has had some success, they are basically the LA Clippers of the city. I actually went to an Independiente Medellín match which cost me 20K COP ($6 USD) for a front row seat behind the visiting goal post. The game was exciting even though Independiente Medellín lost 2-1 to a lesser opponent. On Sunday, Atletico played Independiente Medellín in what is known as “Clásico Paisa”. I wanted to see that game (and even walked to the stadium), however, the whole city was clamoring to get inside the stadium and there were no tickets left for purchase. I ended up watching Atletico destroy Independiente Medellín at a local bar. While the game started competitive, the final score was 5-2.

.Well worth trying to catch a soccer game in Medellin. My wife and I took in three games over the last three weeks while in Medellin. My tips:

1. Buying tickets is confusing. Tickets do not go on sale to the public until three days before each game. You can buy tickets at the stadium (window 2) or at a number of retailers throughout the city (several of these are at malls).

2. We bought our tickets at the stadium. This is a pain because you are talking through a dark screen to a person you can't see, and there are people standing all around you trying to scalp tickets. Ticket prices range from really cheap to over 30.00 per ticket. Warning: Seating is very segregated. You will be sitting in the section where you buy your ticket....you can't buy cheap and move to the good seats.

3. The games are great. Soccer quality is good and the fans are really passionate. The stadium is a 5 min walk from the metro and is safe. There is a ton of security, and tons of people scalping tickets outside. We bought our tickets in advance so I cannot speak to what type of prices there are asking, or whether the tickets are real.

4. No large bags allowed into the stadium.....They sell beer, soda, and all kinds of junk food.

5. If you are there for the Classico (Independiente v Athletico) definitely buy a ticket even if you don't like sports or soccer....a truly wonderful Medellin cultural event.

6. We went to Envigado and watched a match there. Even though Envigado plays in the A league, their stadium is like going to a minor league baseball stadium....much different experience than going in Medellin.

The fútbol game was great, a great crowd, lots of fun, signing, great fans playing as a band. The stadium was litter free, a nice plus. Clean but no soap in the restroom, no toilet paper in the stalls, toilet paper was near entry and you have to take it in with you, but if you didnt know before hand it could be a little unexpected surprise. There were plenty of food stands, but because I used all my cash on souvenirs outside the stadium, I couldnt get food inside because they do not accept credit cards only cash, my bad for not walking with more cash. As with any stadium, there were plenty scammers trying to sell tickets and other stupid trinkets who were very persistent and did not take no for an answer. There were plenty of helpful staff, and heavy policía presence for safety.

We had the great luck to attend a game of the Copa Libertadores de America between the famous Club Atletico Nacional de Medellin and Club Atletico de Tucuman, Argentina. It's the Big One in South America, and the stadium positively reverberated throughout the game with the heavy drums and big band of Medellin's barra, the public dressed to a man, woman and child in team green, loudly and continually singing and shouting undying support. The Roman Coliseum must have been just like this.

We were last minute but were able to get reasonably priced tickets from a scalper.

Great stadium, great game, great people!

You must go to see the Atletico Nacional play football. It is unlike any sporting event in the U.S. The entire city is behind the team on game days. If you are a sports fan, this must be near the top of your bucket list.
