I am a transplant in Medellin from Huntington Beach, California and am always looking for the cool and off the beaten path places that have some history and Salon Malaga fits the requirements in every regards.

This bar has been here since 1957 so why not step in and enjoy a cup of coffee or a beer or a soft drink and simply enjoy the history and energy of this place. The walls are covered with photos of artists along with old buildings of Medellin and I spent no less than 25 minutes just wandering around and viewing and enjoying the place.

This is no Starbucks so don't be expecting fancy coffee rather a cup of tinto coffee which cost 2,000 pesos or about .55 cents and simply sit and relax and if there is a good football game on you can sit and watch without being rushed.

I have been by Salon Malaga so many times over the past 12 years and as recently as yesterday June 15, 2021 and the bar is usually/always filled with locals.

I recommend that if your in the area (centro) to stop by as I will again in future and enjoy this iconic bar.

While taking a walking tour around the city center of Medellin, we passed under the San Antonio Metro subway station, and spoted the 50yr old Salon Malaga bar / billiards hall, come dance school. Having read so much about this place we went inside to check it out, have a beer and an Andean brandy. The cabinets alongside the walls were lined with old radios, gramophones and jukebox’s, there were also lots and lots of black-and-white photographs of long-dead singers on the walls, really nice atmosphere and relatively inexpensive drinks.
The waiter informed us that downstairs was a dancehall, where people came to watch tango dancing and singers, and also to dancing and get dance lessons.

TIP: On the weekend it gets very full, so it’s best to make a reservation.

Our guide took us here for coffee and I absolutely loved it for its atmosphere and great strong black coffee. Don’t expect any lattes here!

Beautiful old cafe in the middle of Medellin. Full of older people, clearly regulars. Eclectic mix of photographs and old juke boxes. My kind of place

My partner and I stumbled upon this place while out and about in Medellin. Our first time in Colombia on a road trip this was our first drink in Medellin. Staff service not great( very young girl just looked bored, to be fair we don’t speak a lot of Spanish so there was that too) I understand she would rather serve a local. But beer cold. Great place decor fantastic , suppose each photo on the wall would have a great story behind it. Music delightful. Great for just people watching.

Salon Malaga is a place that when you go into, you feel that too much happened there. The atmosphere is very great, nice old music, lots of pictures of famous old singers and musicians. Nice place to take some coffee/beer near the center and immerse yourself in a place with history.

If you are going for tango by all means go for the experience. I wouldn't bother seeking it out as a place to just drink a beer or have a coffee in the afternoon. The service was efficient if not particularly friendly. Sitting outside at El Cafe del Museo de Antioquia on Plaza Botero is far more entertaining and the beer is a lot colder.

Since 1957 that salon exists in Medellin. It is so pleasant to sit there spent an afternoon with friends drinking a nice Colombian beer (Colombiana, Clara, Roja or Negra), if you like Tango music visit this salon, Fridays nice dancing, the salon has lots of history.

This is a very traditional place, several jukeboxes and old pictures are part of the decoration. They do not have menu and offer really basic drinks: coffee, tea, beer, soft drinks, rum and firewater (aguardiente). The waitress described the place as a coffeehouse and bar. The place is one of the oldest cafes in town. They have some events during the month, for these you need a reservation. These days there is a minimum consumption per table. There is open wi-fi. According to the waitress most of the customers are regulars.

Very historic Centro bar a short walk from the main downtown metro station (San Antonio). Great atmosphere, the walls covered with black & white photos of performers long gone. I’ve only been there in the day, but the area is safe, and I think they have tango shows/lessons at night.
Not touristy, inexpensive.
