A 2,500 kilometre in length and up to 500 kilometres in width, stretch of mountains which in places forms the border between China and Kyrgyzstan, On our trip we had a meal with local nomadic people, inside their tent.

Standing on top of these mountain peaks and taking in the view is one of the highlights of my life. The mountains are incredible and unique.

Great photos were to be had and it was nice to walk around for a while taking in the scenery. You can take a slow boat ride around the lake but it takes ages.

It is not a huge lake, yet the water from this lake provide drinking water, and irrigation for the crops for the region.

It is breath taking in beauty. We had a short ride in a boat. Personally I'd rather view it's magestic view from around the lake.

We had to use the shuttle bus inside the park, no personal car is allowed inside the park. That extend the time you have to budget for the visit. We had to take three different shuttle to get there, two shuttles th get back to the parking lot.

Urumqi is always sunny. Hire a taxi to Tianshan for a day trip costs CNY1,200, actually a transfer 1.5 hrs to there and back. Beautiful mountain range (Tianshan) with a glacier lake. Recommend to take a boat ride around the lake and walk along the waterfall from top station to middle coach station.

We arrived from Urumqi by car with a private driver. That was really great because it was so difficult for us to judge how long we would spend there (we spend just over 3 hours in the end).

The Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang Province are absolutely gorgeous. The area is quite scenic with lots of greenery and, of course, the mountains. I highly recommend a visit to this area if you have some time.

Upon arrival, we saw the whole area covered with a thin layer of snow – a beautiful sight to behold. The combination of mountain and lake makes a spectacular view. The Tian Shan (Mountains of Heaven), is a large system of mountain ranges located in Central Asia. The highest peak in the Tian Shan is Jengish Chokusu, at 7,439 metres (24,406 ft) high. Its lowest point is the Turpan Depression, which sits at 154 m (505 ft) below sea level. The scenery around is beautiful.

I crossed these mountains by road from Turpan to Urumqi and then by air when we flew from Urumqi to Kashgar. The view by air was much more comfortable. Both views of the mountains were breathtakingly grand. On the road trip we are seriously into Central Asia now with Uighur outnumbering Chinese and the roads adventurous. Today we travelled on the Tuwu highway through the Tianshan mountains otherwise known as Heavenly - which we guessed was associated with their height rather than their beauty. It was filled with trucks as it was the only road through the mountains between Turpan and Urumqi both two large cities of the autonomous Uighur Xinjiang province. Normally this would be another boring bus ride but not today. First, after an hour or so, we saw two smashed up trucks cutting off the opposite two lanes of the highway for miles and miles. The trucks and cars could do nothing but sit in a long line and wait. I thought of the Central Asian highway blockage of a few years ago when the trucks were there for 3 days I think. Then Lo and behold our side of the highway suddenly stopped and did not move for half an hour. Sure enough a car and a truck had come together at a merge and blocked the highway. It was just a few trucks in front of us so we were able to get around it eventually. The drivers in this part of the world are suitably crazy and/or inexperienced or not well trained or just stupid - probably all of those.
Then we began to pass a massive new highway being built to replace this one. This time the new highway is smashing through mountains with tunnels and viaducts just like Europe. Work was happening on its length simultaneously. The Chinese are addressing all their infrastructure issues - even way out here on the fringes of the country.
The scenery through the mountains were awesome.

Visited the mountains on a one day trip and the were amazing as we had good weather and visibility. After the road trip and a small bus ride one gets part way up the mountains. Then there also another smaller bus ride to the start of a cable care ride that is recommended. The cable car ride and the walking areas need about 2-5 hours to complete so plan well if you wish to do a lot of walking or one can make it a short walk and limit the time near the top of the mountains. A must do visit when in Urumqi.
