If you drive this one yourself, be prepared for a very scary stretch of road from Urumqi. It becomes narrow, winding, rutted and ... infested by huge trucks. Top speed is 20km's an hour for the last 30 km's.
The glacier is off the main road about 4 km's by the access road. We didn't figure out who you pay to drive on this, and lots of people were hiking across the marshy meadow so we followed them and it was about 2 kms. By the time we got to the glacier edge it was getting dark, so we didn't explore much. Next time ...
To avoid returning on the scary road, we decided to head south and then back north on a road that looked good on Google Maps. Big mistake. Just as scary to the south and the loop back road was closed. Became a 600 km detour. That explained the huge trucks on the tiny, winding rutted road.
