About
Luodai is an ancient town just outside Chungdu. The buildings date back to the 1600's. The main street is 1km long with ancient buildings on either side containing shops, craftsmen and restaurants. There are a number of dress and costume shops where people dress up to have their photo taken. It is easy to reach by either bus or taxi from Chengdu. The journey is c. 20km and takes about 45-60 mins. On a Sunday it is busy with local torists. Many of the shops and street vendors are of the native Hakka tribe. Well worth a visit for half a day.

The hotel recommended us this place, but we were quite disappointed by this so called ancient town. The buildings are new for sure. I visited old towns in other places that were not very ancient but were nicer than this one. Only souvenirs shops and expansive snacks restaurants.

We continued our free day with a driver provided by China Discovery Tours. At the People's Park teahouse, our drive, Mr Zheng, was suddenly replaced by Mr Wei. He said he had a family member die.
It took 90 min in congested traffic to reach the ancient town of Luodai. I'm happy to report that this town is worth seeing and buying. It's such a pretty, well-laid out pedestrian road with inviting storefronts. It is clean and the storekeepers are friendly and give out lots of samples. Apparently, there isn't the amount of foot traffic as in the city. After my 30 min foot massage (called "foot bath" in Chinese), my wife showed me the souvenirs she bought at prices much less than in the city.
This place is a pleasant distraction. Go!

We went on a Sunday so the street was very very busy. Plenty of shops to buy gifts ranging from the very cheap to expensive jade, silver and gold (shop around as the price per gram varies). Also plenty of places selling food.
We took the Metro to Xihe station. Just outside there are 2 buses you can take to the town. The L024 didn't seem to run on Sunday so we got on the packed 219 which took about 45mins to Luodai Bus station.
To get to the old town walk directly out of the bus station entrance, cross the main road to an alley which takes you directly onto the main shopping street.
Would definitely visit again but on a quieter day. Very interesting place

Another beautiful ancient town of China. There are hundreds, some of which now are in the districts of larger cities, such as in greater Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. The main street of ancient town has become commercialized, probably largely due to the flow of sightseers. The mani street is home to many ancient structures throughout its one-kilometer length. Well worth a visit.

Too commercialised. Every building converted to cater for tourists.Did not have the feel of an ancient town and did not think the food stalls looked very appetising.

There are lots of very beautiful things to see in this touristy ancient town. There are many historic buildings, some over 300 years old, and others rebuilt to replicate the originals. There are many shops for buying souvenirs, eateries, and more. A great place to enjoy strolling through the streets of a town which has existed for centuries.

LuoDai was a nice day trip out for us. Plenty of authentic ancient buildings along the main street, but as usual, it was spoiled by the existence of arcade shops / modern looking shops which is out of place at this ancient town.

A few of the clan halls were underground renovation works or closed as this is the low season. There are many shops selling food and snacks. So do stop and snack along the way.

It was not too difficult to get a Didi to fetch us to Luodai Ancient town, however, coming back to Chengdu City centre was not so easy. Hence, do be prepared to wait for a while for Didi to get back.

The mini Great Wall is about 10-15 mins ride away, hence, I did not get to visit it even though I was at Luodai ancient town. But for those who are keen to visit the mini Great Wall, there are touts for transport to the mini Great Wall which you can take at Luodai gate.
