We had a very enjoyable evening of watching the Sichuan opera performance of face/mask-changing. The bian lian performers put on a spectacular show of changing their very decorative faceplates in the snap of a split second. At times, the masks were changed multiple times in a few seconds.

This Sichuan Opera is a medley of performances bringing to the stage some of the best tea house skits and acts of the last 1000 years. The performers are some of China's best. Every musician is a world class artist. Some have performed worldwide and many have successful recordings.
The most wonderful shadow box artist you will ever see. A very slow "Chinese style" comedy always has Chinese visitors laughing and leaves Westerners bored. Some of the hottest fire breathing you will ever see. An old man puppeteer who performs amazingly sensuous (not sexy) acts with puppets that make you forget it is a man operating those puppets. And of course the famous Sichuan Changing Masks act with incredibly fast face changes.
Every visitor to Chengdu should see this performance at least once. My first tip to you is to have your guide or hotel purchase you tickets in stage center first or second row. These seats get served complimentary tea and peanuts. But best is that you will feel the heat from the fire breather.
You can get an in seat massage or have an ear cleaning performed by very experienced practicioners.
My second tip is to come 30 minutes to 60 minutes early if you are the type of person who enjoys seeing behind the scenes and doesn't need to have constant sensory stimulation. You can casually observe the performers applying make up for the show and take photos. My third tip is that after the show if you are close to the stage, you can quickly go to the stage and get photos with one or more of the performers. But this complimentary photo session is not advertised and the performers don't hang around waiting. You must get up there quickly.

We got our tifckets through our hotel and went to this show to get a first hand taste of the Sichuan Culture. The ticket price included pickup and drop off at our hotel and the admission to the show. I was lucky that I had read part of an English version of Chinese Myths and Legends. With that and the English subtitles displayed at the bottom of both sides of the stage I was able to understand what was happening in the show. Even if you do not understand the show it is well worth the visit to see the costumes, the face changing show and the music. Sit back with an open mind and let them entertain you. It is a highly professional show not to be missed.

I believe that plays and operas are a good window to know old history, tradition and culture of a country and a place. Sichuan Opera was exactly that. After reading great reviews I decided to visit this place. Actual theater is inside a park located on beautiful Qintai Road. Tonghuimen Road station is the closest subway station. Get out of the station and walk towards Qintai road which is hardly 50 m away. Qintai Road is in itself a beautiful street with lots of restaurants. Buying tickets online is usually cheaper, but I bought it from the ticket office located across the street outside the park in which theater is located. I paid 140 CNY and is one of the few places in China which accepts international cards. I will recommend 7:30 PM show. Reach about 2 hours before the show. Most restaurants in China start winding up around 9 PM and the show goes on till 9 so you may not find many restaurants open after the show ends. Around 6 PM inside the park local chinese people assemble and dance. It is a slow rhythmic dance which seems like a form of exercise and is common across China. It is an experience in itself.
I bought the least expensive ticket of 140 CNY. Some people recommend to buy a VIP seat but I felt that even from back seats experience is kind of same as theater is small. Every one is offered unlimited supply of Chinese tea and a snack which you have to crack open and eat.
I have seen a lot of cultural programs around the world and this Opera is among the top 5 that I have seen. It gives you a glimpse of how deep and old the Chinese civilization is. Show is combination of multiple programs including a musical program in which a guy plays a traditional flute like instrument. Everything was great and my favorite were the initial comic skit and mask changing show at the end. Whole program is in Chinese but there is lady host who will introduce each play both in Chinese and English. Do not be deterred by the Chinese language as the show is so great that it will transcend the boundaries and barriers of language and will give you a lifetime experience. If you have only one thing to do in China, then I will recommend this.

This is an absolute tourist trap. This is like Lao She Tea house in Beijing...this has absolutely no value at all.
A few okay shows for a mind boggling 300 rmb. With 300 Rmb you can have 2 good meals in Cheng Du.
My Wife and I went there because we are writing a book about our travels and wanted to see the quality of the performances and to see if we wanted to include it in our book...
So definite no.. This is the place where you pay a tour company to trick foreigners to spend their money and to keep these places alive.
There are definitely better places to go see this and for a much cheaper price. For example, while not good the Tea house across from panda house in Jin Li Street was much better than this and it cost 150 rmb for the both of us instead of 700 something.
Summary-
If you are looking for a tourist trap for tourists then this is the place to go.
If you like spending your money without thinking this is the place to go.
If you are too lazy to look for the really nook authentic shows this is the place to go.

I liked watching the opera! You even get tea and a snack to eat while you watch. The shadow puppets were my favorite! I even paid $20 for them to do my makeup like the opera singers and they took awesome photos of me!

We obtained tickets for the Shu feng Ya Yun Tea House opera at our hotel (Holiday Inn Express). We paid 220 RMB each and were met at the entrance of the teahouse on Qintai street and escorted into the tea house. The tea house is in a park and is like an open pavilion with a roof covering. So you get the feeling of being outside but protected from the weather. Our seats were a few rows from the stage since we had reserved seating. We were glad that we didn't wait to get our tickets at the venue since we would be sitting much farther back. As soon as we were seating we were served jasmine tea from a long spout tea pot and asked if we wanted a massage or cold beer (extra charge). The tea house also offers the traditional ear cleaning service!
There was an area on the right hand side of the theater where you could watch the performers putting on make up and costumes. The performance was more like a variety show than an opera. It consisted of traditional folk instrument selections, stick puppet show, hand shadow show, singing, comedy routine (which loses something if you don't speak Chinese) and the famous changing faces and costumes. Each act was introduced by the MC in both Chinese and English. The whole performance was about 90 mins. long. It was a great taste of the Sichuan culture.

This tea house opera show was great! for only 80 yuan, you get a nice big chair, all the tea you can drink! You can order beers for cheap and can get your face painted. The opera itself is so unique and would recommend it to anyone!

Take metro line 2 and alight at Tonghuimen station. Then exit from Exit E and walked to the place. Be there before 8 pm so that you can see the attendants helping the actors and actresses to makeup. You can also hire the opera costumes to wear and take photos for a fee. You will be served tea and snacks during the show. The show consists of the traditional Sichuan opera show, face changing opera, fire spitting, musical instrument performance, hand shadow show and puppet show.

We decided to see the opera last minute. our guide got us very good tickets- 4th row in the center. The opera started slow, but if you hang in there--- it is an amazing show. The face changing is fantastic, and there is a mix of puppets and fire spitting and comedy. There is a tiny bit of translation going on, enough to get you a good sense of what is happening. If you are sitting in the front and have young children, you may want to consider bringing ear plugs - the start of the show is very noisy with drums beating, etc. It could startle them (here is some perspective- when we go to rock concerts with the children and have seats in the front, we bring earplugs as well , it helps the whole thing be enjoyable instead of LOUD). Warning - DO NOT buy souvenirs in the opera - it is absurdly overpriced and you can get the same stuff on the streets another day for a third of what they are asking you. If you MUST buy, then bargain with the ladies selling. It is China after all!
