The Museum, as Museums go, is quite excellent.
They have many pieces from different periods and peoples of Northern China, including weapons, money, pottery, and Dinosaurs. While we were there, they also had an exhibition of African art and masks, again, it is well done. Most pieces had an English title, but no in-depth description in English.
Not really a place for little kids, unless you want to get them through the dinosaurs, the other stuff may bore them.
No issue recommending this place for those that enjoy history.

First of all, location has been changed to the New Developing Area near Datong University. it is easy to reach by bus from the train station or city center in the wall. Quite interesting collections and display will make you trip to Yunguang Grottoes or the area perfect.

The Datong Museum is new and gorgeous. Unlike the more famous such museums in Shanghai and Nanjing, this museum displays an incredible array of artifacts in the context of the city's history. Modern (see animatronic dinosaurs and slick video interactives) and with English labels, this is an outstanding museum and quite a surprise.

Free entry and lots to see in the new museum. This is a must see if you have the time in Datong. The displays are excellent and there’s a lot to learn about this area’s warring past. My 7-year-old found the warrior costumes and the building itself interesting.

At the end of the Grottos you can pop into this newly built and modern museum to see some rich history. Small and interesting enough to keep your attention! Reviewed by Ronny Fang.

Great Museum for young and old! Some spectacular tombs and vessels. Gives a good overview over Datong's history and art. Beautifully arranged and the building itself is also impressive.

Datong Museum was quite a surprise. In a city that is often shabby and broken-down, Datong Museum is a beautiful modern building with interesting exhibits. It is in the suburbs, far from the old hutongs and construction of downtown. In a short cab ride, you will pass many empty skyscrapers and come to an area with several futuristic buildings, some still under construction. The entire area seemed vacant and strangely deserted. The museum, however, has many interesting exhibits showing the history of the Datong area since pre-historic times. There is a lot of English signage to help explain the relics. Some of the material was unearthed from Datong during contemporary construction. I enjoyed seeing jewelry, painting, chinaware, and furniture. Warning: it is not easy to get a taxi back to town.

The Datong museum has now been transferred to a new area on the outskirts of town, awaiting the completion of other official buildings. It is full of Wei and Tang treasures, from bronze to terracotta. Few visitors. A must.
