The Zhongshan Square is surrounded by some architecturally interesting buildings. Some of the tallest and most brightly lit towers are around this square as well.

There are quite a few restaurants nearby and it is conveniently located. The square is not too large so plan to spend less than an hour here and maybe a little longer walking around.

Zhongshan Square metro station is here and exit B will get you right into the square but be careful if you want to cross the road as traffic is quite chaotic here. Exit B1 will get you on the outer sidewalk of the square.

This is the nice square in the centre of the city. The are of the sqaure is approximately about 215 metres. The square has the park & is surrounded by the very nice picturesque buildings which are mainly converted in to banks currently. A nice place to go for morning walk. Later as the day begins this becomes one of the crowded place.

Zhongshan square is a nice place to walk, but more like shopping since it's close to some luxurious brands and a couple of shopping malls. It's also close to restaurants and banks.

Nice walk from Shangri La Hotel, where I was staying, to Zhongshan Square, then onto the Youhao Square, Dalian Railway Station, Dashang Shopping Street, Victory Plaza, culminating at Laodong Park. Took a relaxing 5hrs to dot his over picture stops, lunch, and a long walk exercise. The Zhongshang "Square" is really a Huge circle, with large walking areas, where you can admire some of the old architectural buildings, juxtaposed against the backdrop of spanking new skyscraper hotel and commercial building towers, and the ever present national birds of China - the construction cranes!! Also, a good chunk of this huge circle square is boarded out due to Dalian Metro construction of some sort, but still leaves ample space for parents and children to feed the birds, hang out in a couple of shaded trees, I just enjoyed the building architectural views. I went around mid-day on a Saturday in July, not crowded, I am told the Square gets very lively with hacky sack playing teenagers, and parents in the evenings...

Although many of the buildings are now used for Chinses businesses, the architecture is very European. The square gives an interesting historical overview of the area and is an easy place to walk about. The central park, which is accessed from the MRT station, has beautiful gardens and is a fun place to sit and watch the children, of all ages, feeding the pigeons.

Great place to take a walk around. Reach up to the centre of the circle and enjoy view of beautiful bbuildings during day and night both. Spend some time with pigeons who are very friendly and will sit on your shoulders if you offer them something.

Sorry, I'm local :)
I grew up some residence nearby, when i was a little girl, we were here almost everyday, mostly in the summer evenings, sometimes after the first snow in the winter, of course the square looked totally different then, in the old days there was a statue of a Russian soldier and fountain in the centre i remember, but in the earlier times it used to be some Japanese official's.
Now i live in somewhere a little far away, but it is always my good experience if i have something to do nearby and come to the zhongshan square again, as you can see the architecture has been mainly preserved, some others renovated, since it's near the BCD of the city now most buildings are converted into banks (as someone mentioned below), but there is also the theatre of the city (as shown in my another pic) and it has always been, maybe that's the reason why i really love here, it reminds me of the golden times when the city has not been so crowded and complicated.
I read some poor reviews on this spot, and i have to admit that to someone who has no special memories about it nor any interest in the history of the wars it is nothing but a traffic hub. But if you are living or working here as a foreigner in Dalian and if you have spare time, it will be a good choice to come here in a shining day (not as today) and walk into any branch of it (the square is like an octopus and every foot leads to somewhere else, Parisian style, said) to find some small restaurants or stores or bars or photographic studios or....besides taking some pics of the building details, which is said of a Yamato-Europian-eclectic style and from this point of view, Zhongshan Square is unique through out China
Or even it's your first time to Dalian, i wish my story above may add some hint or spice to your visit here

There are a couple of interesting old buildings around the square which is now occupied by banks. The subway is right in the middle of the square.

We stayed just a block away from the square. There are many restaurants, cafes and shopping centers nearby. The square itself is very impressive, with a lovely garden in the center and imposing buildings all around. Certainly worth a visit.

Nice 'square', surrounded by old buildings which are now mostly banks. Best enjoyed in the evening, I think, when you can take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the scenery. Seems to be lacking a central focus point.
