If you only visit one classical garden in Suzhou, it has to be this! It is the most popular and best garden for a reason.
There are free guided tours in Chinese. I am not sure if they have them in English.

Largest Garden i think thats downtown and i went to, The best thing about it is the vast waterways and great area coverage with different elemnts and lanscaping. And the Adjourning Museum next to it just adds to the 'Coverage'. Dont miss the Bonsai Garden...More
We went here on a cold and wet day. It was still very beautiful with the wet rocks and bare trees. The grounds are spectacular examples of the traditional Chinese gardens ... With twists and turns making you relax and contemplate the beauty of nature....More

Very interesting layout of a garden in an inefficient old school style, large place to move about with many interesting structures to observe and to take photos of. But more often than not, there are many tourists and I would recommend visiting near sunset or...More
This is not your average backyard garden. It is the product of a grand vision and careful planning over many years. Humble he may have been (it was never gonna be a "she" was it?) to those above him but this is a large and...More
Suzhou is an ancient center of wealth and culture due to its proximity to The Grand Canal, ample water and fertile soil, generating surplus incomes, often invested into highly sophisticated works of art like The Unsuccessful Politicians Garden, better known as The Humble Administrator’s Garden!

If your husband doesnt like the gardens much, and if you must visit one garden, I would definitely recommend the Couple's retreat garden. Basically we stumbled upon this "gem" when we went on hunt for a zoo for my kid. Once you enter the couple's retreat garden complex, dont take right, this is where the normal tour bus takes. You can take left and you will see beautiful lake. Walk further and you will see some fishing area, boating area, the entire area seems so beautiful and Europeanish, reminded of one the lakes I visited in Germany. With almost nobody around, we had the garden to ourselves, pretty much. We just loved this place, luckily this hasn't been so touristy or might be we were lucky that day. If you walk on the other side you will reach the Ou Yuan garden, along a beautiful lake and then it goes to the touristic Couples retreat garden. And hey, this was FREE. I highly recommend this if you want to avoid too much people.
However, if you are ok having lots of people around you, you can visit the humble administrator garden, its quite beautiful, but too expensive and crowded.
Have a good trip to Suzhou!
