Chinese have turned this reasonably pretty old water town into a Travelling shopping mart. It's on canals which makes it attractive
They have several old heritage type houses that cost an extra fee to enter that were from old rich families of their day. Nothing really that exciting even for a westerner.
Sadly every shop that lines the canal is a cheap handicraft shop of some description or restaurant or Starbucks! Vendors even do the typical market type selling at times trying to grab you by the arm.
Then there is the local favorite stinky toe tofu being made in many shops. Honestly it is so repulsive that you either hold your breath for 30-45 seconds or dry reach.
The positives are the beautiful old tea houses, sipping tea, playing Chinese checkers, eating pumpkin seeds by the gallons! Also the town is quite unique and different being on water. Streets are narrow as are the canals. The boat trek down the canal was pleasant and relaxing but relatively uneventful.
Great to see once briefly but wouldn't do again. It's certainly not Venice and not even remotely close to it!

Zhou Zhuang is one of the ancient water towns in Suzhou. Some people also refer to it as the "Venice of the East".

It is an hour's drive from Shanghai. You need to pay an entrance fee:
- Adult RMB 100
- Kids below 1.3 m enter free - yay!
- Older folk above 70 years free, above 60 years RMB50 (this is a great deal)

You can either walk or get your driver to drive you across the bridge to the old town. Look out for the ancient pagoda on the right as you come down the bridge.

There are lots of shops selling food, knock knacks etc in the lead up to the old town. A town specialty is the Pig Trotters (万三蹄)- do give this a try if you are adventurous, it's pretty tasty!

Once you enter Zhou Zhuang Old Town (via the arched entrance, where they collect tickets), here are a few things to do:
- Go on the boat ride (RMB 130 per boat, max 6 pax). For an added tip, the boat woman will sing for you. The boat ride takes you through the water ways of the old town.
- Walk the cobbled streets and enjoy the old buildings. This brings you back to ancient China.
- Have a meal or afternoon tea in the many tea houses along the waterways. Its a perfect way to watch the world go by in Zhou Zhuang. If you are adventurous, try the Grabbies (小龙虾)- they will deep fry it for you. And the other local Suzhou dishes, served with white rice.
- Shop knick knacks (silver and other costume jewellery) or locally made bags and shoes (the ones with the mat/bamboo soles are very comfortable)
- Take lots of pictures of your time in Zhou Zhuang!

I totally enjoyed my day there and i would recommend you make the trip there!

Enjoy ;)
