We went to the ice and music festival after Christmas. The temps were cold, but not as cold as they have been in January. I strongly recommend coming in a tour group because we had issues with taxi drivers who wouldn't talk to foreigners.
There are two parts to the festival. During the daytime, there is a place on the river where you can do fun kids activities, like riding ice slides, getting pulled by a 4 wheeler on tubes, riding a hovercraft, and riding ice bikes. It was fun, but expensive (330rmb per person).
The evening activity with the lights and ice buildings is separate and far away from the daytime activities. It is also expensive (290 / person). It was beautiful, but not worth it for my little kids.

This place is amazing! Unsurpisingly, it is cold as BALLS here so wear a million clothes and take regular breaks in the rest stops. Pro tip - there are outlets in the 'gift shop' which is right next to the exit. Your phone's battery might drain way faster in the arctic-esque temperatures, so bring your charger!
I recommend arriving at about 3pm, so you can have an hour or so walking about the place in daylight, before doing the same thing after the sun has set and seeing the structures lit up, It's an incredible experience - enjoy.

I went in December 2019, its amazing experience. Basically there are 2 places where one can visit in Harbin. The Ice and snow world has huge ice building and there is another place very near, which has snow statues. Both have SEPARATE tickets. And the frozen Shonghua river is also nearby. Do have fun while walking and running on Shonghua river. Its great. And Shonghua river is free of cost.
I went with my parents and we didn't require heating pads. They are useless, just keep 3 layer clothing with a fat outer jacket and purchase it from Gap or Decathlon on India. It should be good. Overall amazing. It unofficially opens in last week of December. I went in last week 30-31st December 2019 I was here.

Had been looking forward to coming here for months, and it didn't disappoint. The sculptures are beautiful and there's a lot of them to look at. The colours are incredible and they keep changing, so it often feels like the festival is alive. There's a few restaurants scattered around the area, so you can stay for hours. Definitely check it out if you have the chance.

But... a nightmare to get to and from - the Didi wouldn’t drive in, nor deal with the traffic so dropped me almost 3km away and said that was the entrance. Leaving, since I couldn’t speak Chinese, I couldn’t find the driver in the mass of disorganized traffic.
That said, the sites were beautiful and it certainly fulfilled the “once in a lifetime” expectation. Honestly, I did think there would be more carving, etc like I saw around the town but this was mostly impressive building made of blocks of ice and light with an ever-changing array of colors. Truly a winter Wonderland come to life (they even had the “Frozen” soundtrack playing in certain areas).
I was a little sad to see KFC and Pizza Hut uber commercializing the spectacle, but, alas, it has now become customary.

Arriving in Harbin after 20 hours on an airplane , I received an email notifying me that all tourist attractions in Harbin are closed due to the Corona Virus in Wuhan. Fortunately the tour company agreed to do a private tour and I was very happy to meet Joanna, who really went the extra mile and showed me the old & new city. I was amazed at the beautiful ice sculptures in the streets and to see the big influence Russia had in Harbin. The architecture new & old are spectacular; my favorite being the Sofia Church, the history of the railway network, how it started & where it is today. The arts theater was another favorite. Joanne knew her history extremely well and I can definitely recommend her to anyone wanting to explore Harbin.

On January 7, we celebrated my birthday in Harbin to see the beautifully carved ice sculptures displayed on the river. It is spectacular and worth braving the minus 20 degrees C weather! Both day and night views were lovely, when it is lighted, the icy sculptures turned to a colourful fairyland! Reflects on how much work and resilience had been put into achieving this beautiful Ice and Snow World. My memories were enhanced with the carefully planned schedule with Wonder from China Discovery. WE had a good guide and driver, both had ensured we stay warm. For those who are in China this is one of the must see and experience location. We had done Beijing, Xian, GUilin also with Wonder which were all very well customised to our requirement. We always had good drivers and tour guides. In Harbin, Helen or guide even brought heated sole pads to keep us warm and made an album of the day's trip.
The other worthwhile visits are Siberian Tiger Park, Sun Island and definitely Volga Manor.

I went during the pre-opening period, therefore the price was RMB 290 and some attractions (including ice bars & hotpots) weren't ready. There didn't accept my overseas student id.
The price includes slides and ice skating. Some good spots for taking photographs. There are performances. The KFC sells coffee, but they won't let you to use your own reusable tumbler.
It wasn't very busy that evening. You need to get a plastic thing to use the slide, but they break easily.
Leaving it is easier than other reviews suggest. There is a taxi rank. Next to it, there are also two options-- one is a public bus RMB 1 back to town; another one is a direct coach to Zhongyang Pedestrian Street. You could change to other buses/ metro/ taxi from there.
The ticket office accepted card payment, but not the restaurants.
Tip: they don't give out paper map (good for the environment), so take pictures of it at the service centers and restaurants.

Whilst spectacular if you look at it in terms of creativity and application, im not sure it's really worth the cost of entrance just to say you experienced it. We went at night and it was extremely cold (as expected). The dome had very limited seating and it was impossible to find a seat to eat something.
Good range of food choices with 2 levels to choose from, and nice little stores to buy gifts etc.. but for $300 odd I could have given it a miss.

If visiting Harbin you will be asked if you visited here, so definitely a place to stop by. The area is relatively small and it can all be seen within half a day, but it's too cold to see it so quick so stopping by the restaurants and trying some small activities will make the trip last half a day comfortably. It's a nice place sort of like an art museum for ice. We went on a Thursday during the non peak season. Not many people.

Hi, my mum want to see this ice sculpture. The problem is, she need he wheelchair from time to time. My question is wether this place is wheelchair accessible
Written 18 October 2019
It depends on how icy the ground is at the time that you are there. Most of the ground was flat so it was easy for my wife to get around using a walker. This is different to a wheelchair as the weight of the person using it is distributed over four wheels and less likely to get bogged in wet ice.
I am going to ask the guide who showed us around the park if he thinks they should hire a similar walker so that more disabled people can see the sculptures.

Best period to visit is January....
Written 7 October 2019
I was there mid January during the week and a Chinese National Holiday period. It is busy, but I didn't feel the crowd was overwhelming or too much. People are not bumping into you and you do not feel jostled as you walk around (during the day or in the evening).
