Beacon of Haikou

The Clock Tower in Haikou is not very significant as it is just a dull brown tower block standing lonely at the northern edge of the historical center of Haikou and at the south of the Haidian River. The door to the Clock Tower is locked and one cannot access into the Clock Tower. The Haikou Clock Tower was originally built in 1928 and signified the development of trade in Haikou city but it was partly damaged during the Cultural Revolution and was rebuilt in 1987. I had visited and seen the Clock Towers in Penang and Melaka and just like her counterparts, the Haikou Clock Tower served as a standard time piece to facilitate trade for all the merchants, custom officials and the transport infrastructure. It was built with a European Gothic design to contrast the surrounding palm trees. I found this historical landmark a beacon for my exploration. The Qilou Old Street is located just directly opposite the Clock Tower and the area is a bit of complicated comprising the many alleys and lanes. And each time I saw the Clock Tower, I knew I was walking towards the north of the Old Street area. The Clock Tower also guided me towards exploring the Haidian attractions like the Baishamen Park and the Hainan University. Right in front of the Clock Tower is a public bus stop and when I was returning from the Holiday Beach, I chose to alight at this public bus stop as it is nearer to my hotel. The Clock Tower thus acts as a beacon for explorers seeking direction. It pales in comparison with the Clock Towers in Penang and Melaka.

This is not an 'attraction' that I would go out of my way to visit. It is across the road from Qilou Old Street which is one of Haikou's historic visitor sites, so take a look and grab a photo when visiting Qilou Old Street the job done. I must confess I took a photo whilst driving past!

exterior of tower is damaged, needs a bit of repair. clock is still working though, and it chimes on cue. not much of a view around it, so take the opportunity to walk through the old streets when you're there. old streets, new shops, not much of a culture.

Actually, you can't. So why is it a tourist destination that I'm given the ability to review?
