The historical heart of Beihai is by the sea. Ignore the endless tourist shops selling pearls and cheap chimes and look up to enjoy a street filled with charm and mystery. Everywhere in Chinese cities you see skyscrapers. Beihai is not as intrusive and doesnt feel like you are being pressured or intimidated by them. Well designed

This area is in the north part of the city close to the north harbour. Most of the buildings date from the early 1900's and look it. Some buildings have been rebuilt but there is a good variety of shops and food stalls and it is pedestrianised with the usual collections of character statues to photograph.

The old town is possibly the most attractive part of Beihai. Not only are the building still in authentic state, there are some very interesting stores and cafes there.
