Shenzhen's city museum consists of four premises but most refers to the main building at the Civic Center in Futian district. The regular exhibition offers a compact guide to the history and development of the Guangdong city. While the sudden growth of Shenzhen from a sleepy Hakka town to China's major metropolis is impressive, the Cantonese customs and traditions still influences the city. The museum is an ideal start to explore Shenzhen. Free admission but registration via Wechat is required.

Lots of non-local folks only know about the Shenzhen Museum near Civic Center, but there is actually a smaller one which focuses on ancient artifacts Though smaller, its holdings is still plenty interesting, with permanent exhibitions on pottery/porcelain and bronze vessels. The quality of the special exhibitions varies, though, and the one on maritime history when I was there featured more models and pictures than the real things. The building itself is modern enough, but most of the writeups are in Chinese. No seats throughout the museum, and no decent museum shop, nor are there exhibition catalogs. And if you go in the summer, be prepared for hordes of screaming kids (and parents). But for someone who can read Chinese and interested in ancient Chinese stuff, certainly worth a visit (about 10-15 min walk from the nearest subway station)

This is a modern museum and huge. I spent more than an hour at this Exhibition Hall of Shenzhen before the Reform and Opening Up. It is all delightful as well as absorbing experience from this museum.

While on a business trip, I found myself with an afternoon free. I love to learn about the places I visit, but rarely have the chance. This was a great museum. It provides history, folklore, insights into local traditions and festivities. There are also adding an animal exhibit.
The gift shop was extremely reasonably priced and I bought a few souvenirs to take back.
It is an easy walk (less than 1 mile) from the central business district.
I would highly recommend.

This Museum is easy to access from the Civic Center metro stop, and is just across the road. All admission to the museum is free. Shenzhen Museum houses exhibits and artifacts, and does broadcast some general interest movies about China and China's Shenzhen district.

I love learning about ancient China. Much can be learned at its museums, and this is a good one for local Shenzhen and Guangdong Province history and artifacts. The fossils and dinosaurs bones section take us back millions of years. Quite amazing.

Good local history information and artifacts, including 20,000 pieces of cultural relics, art treasures, and paleo-biological fossils estimated to be up to 100 million years old

Free entrance and covers ancient history of the Shenzhen area over the centuries. Displays show significant moments for the people, their struggles and eventual return of Hong Kong to China in 1998. Start on the ground floor and work your way to the top, the museum flows that way which allows everything to be seen in time sequence. The first floor has traveling exhibits from other Chinese museums. The displays were well presented with plenty of full sized historical tableaux which made it very fascinating and photogenic. Photography (without flash) is permitted in most areas. I would recommend this place to anyone who goes to Shen Zhen

This is a typical city museum, with interesting displays on the history of the area (apparently already settled for many thousands of years) and tidbits of the economic/financial history, which was especially vigorous during the last twenty years.
