An interesting fort to visit if you are interested in Chinese military history and places. The wall at this coastal defence fortress is 5 meter thick and built during the Opium War (1856-1880) as Shantou was one of the treaty ports opened to foreign trade after the second Anglo-Chinese War. Explore the moat surrounding this garrison and the huge canons placements around and the complex but yet simple communication tunnels and vents used by the gunners!

This attraction is located at 20 Haibin Road. I bumped into this attraction accidentally when having my leisure stroll along the waterfront promenade. The entry was free and the fortress structure reminds me of A Formosa in Melaka and Fort Cornwallis in Penang. They were all constructed at the coastal line to guard against maritime attack from the sea.

Shantou was one of the treaty ports open for trading to the West at the end of the Qing Dynasty. The Manchu administration realized the urgency to fortify her vulnerable coastal defense after the humiliating defeat in the Opium Wars.

The fortress is well-maintained and gave me an insight into the naval weaponry used during that era. The well-polished replica cannons on the second floor were manufactured in Germany and were the most advanced naval weaponry at the turn of the century.

Communication through ventilation towers was relatively primitive compared with the modern sophisticated radio communication network. There was no piped water supply and the Manchu military officers deployed at the fortress survived from water retrieved from a well dug out in the middle of the fortress.

The fortress probably had a deterrent effect against foreign imperial aggression at the turn of the century but it served no purpose when Japanese bombers raided Shantou during the Second World War.

From Haibin Road, you can also take a ferry at RMB1 to Queshi Scenic Resort across the bay. You can combine both visits to both attractions in a day tour of Shantou.

To me, this is a place on top of visiting Haibin Road of Shantou.
Pleasing environment with richness in heritage of Shantou, dated back to Qing Dynasty.

Some nice backdrop if you are into photography. No entrance fees to visit. Will recommend to visit in the early morning or during sunset. Otherwise can be really warm.

Qilu Fortification is located inside the Shipaotai Park in Shantou, China.

This fortress is located near mouth of the Swatow river (along Haibin road) was build during the Qing Dynasty...the fortification is in a form of annular castle with 18 cannons (replicas of the original guns) mounted on the upper and lower levels, primarily to guard the river entrance of the seaport - note the present day Chinese navy vessels are berthed alongside across the road from the fort.

The ground level of garrison which is surrounded by a moat. The lower level of the fortress is for the troops to rest...27 stone steps outdoors lead to the guns positions on the upper level. Walk along the top of the fortification to view the 72 message and ventilation towers that surround the upper level... the towers ventilate the lower level where the troops rest and allows quick communication channels for fire missions and roll call during the historical days of this fort.

There are few signs in English, so it's best to go with a Chinese tour guide if you are interested to learn the history of this old fortress.

Built during Qing Dynasty, the fort is equipped with several cannon with their fixed shooting range towards the sea. The fort is of half the size is a football pitch and 2 story high.

A former fortress-turned park with a small amusement ride on Haibin Rd. Used as a military training camp during the liberation before being turned into a public park in the early 90's. Interesting to know that the center area of the circular fortress has been turned into a roller skating rink for the local children and young adults. Very interesting construction material used with its historic cannons still in place. Half an hour is all that is needed to see the whole area. Visited 2012
