I've been to quite a few pedestrian streets in China and would say this is the most average of the ones I have seen. We found ourselves walking through this area because we were going to check out other areas around it. The architecture is interesting but it is a plain pedestrian area. There are some of the Xiamen food items here but they are a tad overpriced.

Very nice evening strolling with eating and drinking, nice people around. We didn't spent too much time, yet we were filled with pleasant feeling of another vacation day. It's probably better to visit in the evening.

Especially nice at night when it is more colourful. There are many stores offering reasonably priced goods, a variety of restaurants, and cafes.

This is a must go shopping street in Xiamen. There is plenty of food and shopping available. You can go for piaza hut(I think it is like 40 stories high) which overlooks the Guyangyu Island. Excellent view.
Along these streets, they have street fairs every weekend starting from Friday. You can get imported Taiwan stuff there.
**Please remember to check prices at different stores before buying. Especially dried items as the prices at different stalls can range quite big. Try to go with a local if possible as the stalls will always try to rip foreigners.
I went to a shop to buy dried fruits. Price quoted to me was 80CNY per kg. When I went with a local, it was 40CNY per kg!

I came to Xiamen on the very first day of China's Golden Week. I really appreciate the full meaning of the Chinese proverb 人山人海 when I walked along this Zhongshan Pedestrian Street.
It was a sea of human crowd flooding the entire commercial area. You can really feel the festive mood at this place. It is so vibrant and dynamic with pulsating music and songs blasting from most shops and you thought this would not end. People were so relaxed leisurely patronizing one shop after another and the roads were closed to traffic after night.
Buses were so crowded that you hardly had the chance to squeeze your way up on board the bus. I almost lost myself in the euphoria of the festive mood and suddenly realized like Cinderalla that I had to rush back to my hostel at Xiamen North and was worried not able to catch the last bus back. Most buses that ply along the main Zhongshan Street were so packed like sardines and the bus driver refused to open the front bus door. I managed to walk further down to the cruise center and catch a bus back.
I really enjoyed my leisure walk along this pedestrian street. Most shops enticed you with their promotional items. The shops are generous enough to let you sample their sale products be it mango slices, coconut juices, flower drinks or barbequed pork, tea. So, I hop from one shop to another sampling as much of the free food. I suspected the free food samples food must have added saccharin or some other sweeteners which caused me my thirstiness.
There were many restaurants and eateries selling seafood sets. But it was costly as a set meal may cost a bomb of more than RMB 250. But the colorful layout on the stall was so tempting and attractive. Xiamen is a coastal city abundant with seafood and this make Zhongshan Pedestrian Street different from the rest of the commercial streets in the inner part of China.
The beautiful architectural designs of the lighted arcade buildings along this street adds a taste of Western atmosphere to this commercial street. Most of the shops were originally built by the overseas Chinese who returned from South East Asia. The architectural designs combined the British style with the Nanyang flavor. The romantic aesthetic features captured the visitors' hearts when the neon lights were turned on at night.
The whole Pedestrian street is so overwhelmed with crowds on the Golden Week and that makes this commercial street so spectacular with the festive mood.

Hi. I am staying at harbour hotel xiamen. Its on xinglin E road. I want to go to zhongshan road and visit. Is it easy to take bus? Can you suggest me which bus I have to take for go to zhongshan road and comeback to hotel? And If I need to take taxi how much I have to pay? And what time is best to go to zhongshan road for taking photo and shopping dresses?
Written 12 May 2019
Harbour Hotel in Jimei is quite some distance to Zhongshan Rd. in South Siming district To be sure, by bus to Main railway station in Xiahe Rd, and from there many buses go to Xiada( Xiamen Univ like Bus # 2 Another place is to go the SM mall and transfer another bus at the Bus depot to Xiada. Fare is RMB 1.00. From Jimei to Zhongshan cost more than 35 RMB. There is a rapid bus option too from Jimei to the above mentioned bus transfer stations.
Zhongshan Rd starts to come alive after 4 PM. There are still some shops selling garments, but usually for young people.
You may visit the underground mall in the area of main railway station for RTW, try Walmart also nearby.

What is time open and close?
When go to Zhongshan from airport?
Written 30 September 2018
I have a layover for 8hours and 30minutes at Xiamen International Airport . I will arrive at the airport at 15:30 and my next flight will be at 00:10. Anyone can sugest what/where can I do or where can I go. Not far from the airport. How long it will take to go to that place .How do I get their using public transportatio ? and usualy how much will it be ?
Written 16 June 2018
Hello! So, Xiamen International Airport is 15.5 km to Zhongshang Lu. If you arrive at the airport around 15:30...with taxing...getting off the plane and then immigration...you'll probably out by 16:30 or 17:00. If you get a Taxi...probably another 30 mins. I don't know how much it will cost you from the airport to zhongshan lu, but I advise you go to the information desk and ask. I bet they've been asked this question before and would know the answer and probably direct you to the right cab/taxi area.
So, let say you get there by 17:00 that should give you 4 hours to go around which is pretty good if you just want to check that place around and try their food. then go back to the airport by 21:00 to check in and stuff. I usually give myself at least 2 hours before boarding. There's a lot of things to see in the airport too. :)
Hope this helps. Oh and I have family there, so I never used public transportation the times I went there.
Have fun!!! Eat lots of awesome food!

Whats the best thing to do if I have a 12 hour layover?
Written 30 December 2016
I assume that your layover is during the day. I would highly suggest Gulangyu island. It may require a little preparation in terms of getting tickets, and if you don't mind crowds, it's worth a visit. I think it's the best attraction that Xiamen has to offer.

Hey Jason..want to take home some gifts for relatives back home. What can i expect to shop for here and how do we bargain?
Written 3 December 2016
Most are fixed price shops. No bargaining allowed.
Some shops does have some perks if you buy more than a certain quantity or $.

How late are shops and food stands open here? Also does anyone have any recommendations on good late night dim sum in Xiamen? We have a night lay over and would love to find some good food and nightlife so any recommendations would be so appreciated!!
Written 9 November 2016
Most shops close around 10pm on weekends and 9pm on weekdays. Restaurants close around 10pm but there are smaller restaurant in the side lanes that are open till around 3am to 4am. Taiwan Food street (next street from Zhongshan road) food stall open till around 11pm - 12pm. There is a restaurant named Chao Fu Cheng (潮福城)Across the road LuJiangDao (鹭江道) from Zhongshan road near the Ferry terminal to GuLangYu island. They serves DimSum till 3am and The Dim Sum is half price after 11pm.

hello! I was at Xiamen with my parents in August. My parents aged between 57 and 61. it is OK to have self walking tour and it is easy. Taxi is available and you just need to know which destination / tourist spot that you wish to go. Xiamen is not huge, easy moving around by subway or taxi.
