Awesome park in the middle of the city. The trees are spectacular. We were lucky to see a parade of the military on the side street along the park today. Nice statue in middle of park
Would visit if your in town.

The central public space in Punta Arenas is Plaza Muñoz Gamero, also known as the Plaza de Armas. It is a couple of blocks inland from the coast and port. The many classical buildings that surround the plaza include the cathedral and Palacio Sara Braun. Central area for shops and restaurants.
There are decorative trees and shrubs which provide the benches with shade and a break from the wind. Street vendors and musicians provide the entertainment.
In the centre of Plaza Armas Muñoz Gamero is a massive granite and bronze monument dedicated to Ferdinand Magellan and his explorations. Around the base are other statues including those depicting the original inhabitants of the area. People queue to rub the foot of one of the figures.

Nice, large area with a monument under renovation in the center. Large portion of the square is currently closed off. Giant trees with nice buildings around it. Not much to see or do.

This is the main square of Punta Arenas which seems to be visited by all tourists. This square is crowded with tourists and locals. Certainly worth walking around to get good views of monuments and buildings in the vicinity.

Most people who arrive in Punta Arenas will find themselves at the Plaza de Armas at some time. There are a number of old trees and a very impressive statue of Magellan to look at. Lots of people will queue up to rub his foot, it must be a good luck thing. Sadly in the area surrounding the square a lot of the buildings are covered with graffiti and shops, although open, have their windows boarded up, a sign of bad times.

We came to this plaza because our free shuttle from the Holland America Volendam dropped us here. It is as simple as that. Following a wonderful tour to Magdalena and Marta Islands, we returned to the ship and boarded the shuttle here. We were glad that we chose to do so. This is a very nice plaza in the center of everything. It has the usual shops and souvenir stands but is dominated by a monument to Ferdinand Magellan at its center. Legend has it that, if you kiss the toe of the indigenous person on the statue, that it will bring you good luck and that one day you will return to Punta Arenas.

After several hours of just seeing the sights we found ourselves in Plaza de Armas. We plopped ourselves down onto a nice shady bench and sat for a good long while and just enjoyed the cool breezes and the pleasant sights.
There were vendor booths, children playing and much to enjoy.

This is one of the prettiest city plazas in all of South America. At the center of the plaza is a massive granite and bronze monument dedicated to Ferdinand Magellan and his explorations. The landscaping of the square includes walkways, grass and many mature large trees.

BOTTOM LINE: Most of the city tours stop here because it is popular with tourists visiting Punta Arenas. Around the plaza are government buildings, shops, souvenir stands, a church and visitor center. In the center of the square is a large monument tribute to Magellan. It has indigenous natives depicted on two sides and a mermaid on the front side. One of the bronze native sculptures features a male with a big foot and shiny bronze toe. Legend has it that if you kiss his toe that it will bring you good luck and that one day you will return to Punta Arenas. Well, this was our third time visiting here, so the legend must be true! MUST SEE SITE. MY RATING: 10/10

PROTESTS: Like throughout Chile, this are has been rocked with government protests and you can see boarded up businesses and buildings throughout the city. Many are covered in graffiti and splattered red paint. Unfortunately, this plaza is not exempt and the Magellan monument as been vandalized also. So sad to see,

Lovely tree-shaded plaza surrounded by stately buildings in classic European architectural styles. Several monuments to historical figures and events.
