About an hour outside of Iquique, Chile are the surprising and amazing Pintados geoglyphs. Created as long as 1,500 years ago, they are among the world's largest display of aboriginal art and adorn many of the desert hills. Some of the figures are geometric while some depict humans and animals and still others are abstract. Their exact purpose remains a mystery that makes for a great topic of discussion.

It is on ruta 5 around a hour from Iquique, direction Antofagasta.
Conaf is managing it. 4000 pesos entrance.
It is 3 km from the road but the road to the Geoglifos is paved.
You can walk 1 km and you will see around hundred Geoglifos.
Good parking space.

If you drive yourself there, it is 4000 pesos each person to enter. But beautiful, and a museum with good information.

If you take a tour of the sights around Iquique, try to find one that includes the Cerro Pintado geoglyphs. They are a fascinating place to visit, and the largest collection of geoglyphs after Nazca. The whole hillside is full of human figures, mysterious hooded priests, llamas, pumas, eagles, snakes, sharks, geometric patterns and abstract designs.

Open until 5pm while most guide books advertise 6pm or later. Arrived at 4.50pm and very friendly and informative Conaf staff let us in and didn’t rush us out. Short walk to see all the Geoglyphs and the small but well documented museum. Well worth a detour from Pica or Humberstone for a daytrip from Iquique.

Although it takes more than an hour to get there from Iquique it is more than worth while. The geoglyphs a mind boggling to say the least. After the Nasca geoglyphs these are the second largest in the Americas!

It is worth the trip to get to see these prehispanic geoglyphs
Take sun glasses. If you have a dron or good zoom lens you can get nice pics. If not you can also do so. Better to visitin afternoon for picture purposes although its more windy

As I visited during la fiesta de la tirana, it was very difficult to get there. I hitchhiked to the road that leads to the pintados, it is about an hour walking from there to the visitors center. It was absolutely worth it!! There is a little museum with some information (also in english) and behind the museum there is a short path with some more information. From the path you can see loads of geoglyphs, it is very impressive!
