Santa Cruz postcard. The square is always very busy, with families, children, elderly people. Everyone stops in the square, including the pigeons. There are a lot of pigeons, but I don't consider it a problem. There is a vast amount of commerce around and there are always vendors in the square.

Beautiful cathedral with an intricate wooden ceiling. Definitely worth a visit when you are in the area. The square outside is filled with life of the people who live here. Trees, flowers and bushes make this area a lovely place to sit and find peace.

Plaza 24 de Septiembre was the first place we visited in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. The place is full of trees and full of people. It is surrounded by restaurants, artisan's shops, the City Hall, with its balconies, and shops of all kinds. You can just sit, relax, and take nice pictures. And at night, it is even more beautiful, with the lighted cathedral overlooking the plaza. We took some extraordinary photos there.

The only reason why we came to Santa Cruz was because we went to Uyuni for the Salt Flat and had to fly out from here. Otherwise, this is a very boring and not at all a good looking city.

This plaza appeared to be the center of life in Santa Cruz. Old and young were gathered here on tne Saturday night i visited. It has a very laid-back atmosphere. There are several cafes and restaurants around, and lots of shopping.

On Sundays, there's a tourist market set up beside the Cathedral. We went around 4 p.m. when it was cooler and shaded. The vendors were very polite and not pushy at all. Loved it!

I do enjoy visit and spend some hours at this place, especially at night when i can buy that good coffee and milk from those guys that became an "institution" typical from Santa Cruz (the coffee sellers). BUT always the same problem: cleanliness! Seems that the local gov is not much worried if there was a storm during the day or the previous night! Plaza will have the ground still durty......

The main place the entire population of Santa Cruz seem to hang out here in the evening... young couples holding hands/snuggling on benches, old men playing chess, art students painting, tourists clicking away for the perfect photo and the odd solo back packer sat reading his book watching the world go by...

Centre of town seemed awfully quiet and most things were closed for lunch so had to wonder around to kill time.
Found a lot of the locals eating in a huge food hall off a side street.
Big question is...why so many opticians in one small area?

Can anyone tell me how far the airport is from plaza 24 de septiembre? We have a 10 overlay and don’t want to spend it at the airport. Is the plaza safe in the evening hours?
Written 29 March 2019
Hi Carrie.
Sorry for my late answer, from Viru Viru Airport to the "Plaza 24 de Septiembre " in a cab it can take about an hour with traffic. There is a regular fee about 70 bolivianos (10 dollars) in a cab (just one way).
About your question, its safe in the plaza , there are a lot of places likes pubs or to have dinner around the plaza, there is also "La Catedral" principal Catolic Church.
When you return to Viru Viru try to take a cab in an authorized stop , it's safer than to take a taxi at the street.
Luck with you visit.
Lorena.

No, nothing guided, but for a few B's you can hop on any micro (shared taxi mini-buses) and take a spin. Just stick to the innermost two anillos.
