Pan Nu Naing Naing, our guide in Mandalay, was very keen that we should visit this pagoda which is not on the tourist trail. Indeed when we arrived, there was not the milling crowd of tourists and the place is profoundly quiet and sedate.
A short walk under the hallowed arches led us to the main area where we saw the reclining Buddha covered with gold. Nearby were images of the Buddha and a shrine.
We met the monk who looked after the Pagoda and he kindly handed us each a postcard of the shrine.
This is a wonderfully quiet sector of Mandalay where one can view the building and the reclining Buddha without the intrusion of photographers forcing their way in front of us, disturbing our thoughts.
If you want something unusual and away from the maddening crowd, make your way to the Kusinara Pagoda. If is free too.
Thank you, Pan Nu Naing Naing!

Named after the holy site where Lord Buddha attained parinibbāna (nirvana), Kusinara Kyaung is located at the foot of Mandalay Hill yet most locals haven't heard of it. Our driver asked a few guys on the street and tried to convince us that such a place didn't exist. So I asked him to take us to Mandalay Hill Resort and within five seconds a friendly receptionist gave him the instruction. The monastery itself doesn't look like much from outside, but inside the cavernous hall (funded by rich Thai families) is what everyone comes here for: the golden reclining Buddha. The visit took us no more than 15 minutes yet it's one of the highlights of our (second) trip to Mandalay.

Even it's situated at the base of Mandalay Hill , Not many drivers and locals know about it! It's in Ingyin Taw Ya Monastery & it has stunning Reclining Buddha Image. All the pillars are decorated with Sal Tree Design where the Buddha entered Parinivanna ( Buddha passed away under this Sal Tree in Malar Kings' Garden )! If someone who would like to visit not touristy area , it's the best choice in Mandalay. It's surely worth to visit & It's on the motorway of Mandalay Hill.

I don't want to tell you how great an experience this was in case you find it and it becomes part of the tourist trail of must dos. It is the most beautifully, unexpected pagoda we visited in all of Mandalay. Our taxi driver has been travelling up and down Mandalay Hill for ten years and he did not know it existed. He came in with us and he nearly cried. He took photos to show his friends and family. The temple caretaker (a very old gentleman) took us around and showed us all of the important artifacts and with help from our driver we made sense of it. To find it drive up the start of the Mandalay Hill road. Past the dirt track on the right and it is the next opening on the right with a couple of red benches outside. It has a screen outside scrolling the temple name in digital lights. The reason the Burmese cannot find it is because they call it by a different name. Ask at the Mandalay hill resort hotel concierge table. They know where it is but my directions are better. Don't tell anyone else.

It's actually pronounced kudinayo but the neon sign above the door says kusinara. If you ask for directions try the first name

Not surprising if local people doesn' t know this pagoda. My taxi driver had to drive here and there to find this pagoda. It look rather old and dirty outside but great inside. You can see some teenages here because of no tourists. I don' t see any recommendation about visiting this pagoda but it is actually a must to go destination for you.

I was shocked and amazed, firstly because I was the only person in the whole place and secondly because it was stunningly beautiful! My driver had never been so he did have to ask directions but obviously found it. It is like the first or second temple on the way uphill. Not sure if it is the main road up Mandalay hill or not? The driver came in and the caretaker appeared. He took us around the back of the big Buddha to see the smaller one and then told us to rub Buddhas bum for good luck - what ever works! The caretaker also took us out to a small enclosed "shrine" that housed a smaller baby Buddha . He explained that the upkeep for the temple is paid for by a Thai family.
The walls are gorgeous, painted white with gold trees of life! I would highly recommend you ad this to your itinerary!

Our guide (Hla Myo) took us to this Buddha. It is a reclining dying Buddha. I got a profound spiritual hit here. It is very quiet and absent of people. No one seems to know about this Buddha. In addition to the Buddha, the pagoda itself is quite interesting. I highly recommend a visit.

We knew this place from our driver. The place is located at the feet of Mandalay Hill. It didn't look lovely from outside but it was different inside. The reclining Buddha was quite lovely but the things that caught our eyes were the floral designs called "Sal Flowers" that decorated all the pillars & walls of the pagoda.
It's actually a must visit place.

This is a silent, turly peace temple located near Mandalay hill. I think most of tourists rarely know this place as it doesn't famous as the other temples but I think it is worthy to visit. Above the reclining buddha, the roof is decorated with the ancient indian flowers called "Sal flower. This place imitates the forest at KUSINAGRA, India where Wolrd honoured Buddha, lying up entered Nirvana. And a Sal (Sala) tree on either side of him.
