The Mahamuni pagoda or Mahamuni Buddha temple in Mandalay is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Burma. The temple houses the Mahamuni Buddha image, the most highly revered Buddha image in the country. The pagoda was built in 1785 by King Bodawpaya of the Konbaung dynasty after the Mahamuni image was captured during the invasion of the Arakan Kingdom. The gold plated statue of Buddha is different from the usual Buddha's face one sees.

I'd say it is a must-see attraction if you visit Mandalay. Most visitors go and pray in the early morning, so crowded with people. Only the men are allowed to put gold papers to the Buddha image and in the morning, the monks and some men always do cleaning the face of the Buddha. Moreover, one local man told me that the face of the Buddha image is becoming bigger and bigger as same ratio as the body that becomes bigger by putting gold papers everyday. (But not so sure about that, have to look the relevant book or website carefully). There are also many stalls that you can buy souvenirs in Mandalay.

It is impressive but it is crowded. It is interesting to observe how so many local people stream in to worship. Only men are allowed in the most sacred part inside but there is a video screen where you can see the inner sanctum.

This Pagoda is the main religious structure in Mandalay like Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon. It is not stupa, it is a big Buddha Image in the temple. Most of the men are putting the gold leaf on the body of the image. And also, you can see the temple of the image. That style is Italian Style. You can also see wood carvings, stone carvings, bronze statues, the things for religious and some accessolaries at the entrance ways.

We visited this Pagoda as part of a private tour.
It was fascinating to see the Buddha being embellished, watched on a TV screen so that all (primarily ladies) could also see.
The Pagoda is beautifully decorated with jade tiles, and has a welcoming feel.
I would not go out of my way to see it, but is was intriguing to see.

Most people come to see the budda which is now very big due to gold leafs. You can see pictures of the original statue and it is amazing how much it has changed due to all the gold being put on it.
Only men can put the gold on him and you have to pay for doing it.
But the place is nice and peacefull. There are a few statues from the Angor Wat temple in Cambodia, a big bell and a small museum.

The body of 4-m high Buddha statue is already covered with a 6″ deep layer of gold layer pressed on its body donated by pilgrims over the past century. There is a museum inside the temple complex, which tells about the history of Buddhism – it provides information about the various places in the life of the Buddha, from His birth to enlightenment to final Nirvana – with maps that explain about the spread of Buddhism across Asia during the last 25 centuries. The relation of King Ashoka with Buddhism led to the erection of the pillar of Ashoka, which underscores the Buddhist doctrine, inside the temple complex.

This is a huge and obviously much loved pagoda. The Buddha is so venerated, that his features are becoming obliterated because of the amount of gold leaf he is wearing. You could see the men inside the sanctuary applying it, while the women kneel outside it to pray and watch (typical - the men alway get all the fun). There is a run of large portraits of teh Buddha taken over a century or so which shows how he has changed in shape, size and features as gold leaf is applied. Happens to us all, only not so shiny, I guess, as we age!
In the grounds of the Pagoda there is a little museum/exhibition of religious statuary. There is a particularly nice rendition of the three headed elepahnt. These were obviusly being damamged by worshippers touchng them over time and so they are now protected with glass screens.

The Mahamuni buddha is over 12 feet tall and is gold coated. It is the main attraction but there are others which include mural and historical paintings, stone inscriptions, bronze statues, traditional handicrafts, a library and a drum tower. The best part is the scenery below that you are able to get being high above. Don't forget, this is a place of worship and you must remove your shoes.

Can anyone tell me the cost of gold leaf to buy to put on this Buddha?

When I climbed up to the Buddha a security gave me some gold leaves for free to put.
Women also buy gold leaves for better karma. Because they are not allowed to climb up, they give to the security to find someone to put for them.
