Şchei Gate (a.k.a. Poarta Schei) is 40m south of Catherine's Gate. It was built 1827 - 1828 to facilitate increased traffic into Brasov citadel, replacing the smaller Catherine's Gate. The classical-style gate has three openings. The large middle arch accommodates trader's carts, while the smaller side arches are for pedestrians. Latin inscriptions on the wall above the side arches proclaim the gate is dedicated to Hapsburg Emperor Francis I, who visited Brasov in 1817.

Part of the fortifications that were surrounding Brasov - century ago - is 1 of the gateways from the fortified city - and Brasov was one 1 of the most fortified cities in Transylvania - since it was locate at the very frontier of the Kingdom/Empire - Kingdom of Hungarian and Habsburg Empire after 1867 the Austrian Hungarian ...
Neo - Classical architecture , built with 3 arches in 1827 due to the need for a bigger gate since the "Ekaterina" gate could not handle the increased traffic - so part of the defensive wall was demolished and the Schei gate was built.
Nowadays is one of the cities landmarks.
So when you walk around in Brasov, you will most likely get here so you can take a few pictures.

One of two (among what formerly were five) city gates in medieval Braşov, this one has arches for pedestrians and vehicles. It’s a block from Strada Sforii and a great area to walk around before entering the Old City pedestrian-only streets.

Rather simple, but nice and tastefuly renovated gateway to the old city of Brasov. Not many artistic elements.

Originally, the old fortification of Brasov had three entrance gates which were also part of massive bastions built to keep invaders outside the city walls.
To these, two more gates were added but sadly, only two of the five now survive to tell the story of medieval Brasov.
Catherine's Gate and Schei Gate are both located South-West of the fortress but the others, mainly on the north side of the fortified walls, were demolished during the 19th Century to make way for the ever increasing traffic.
Poarta Schei or Schei Gate is next to Catherine's Gate which used to be the only entrance into the fortified citadel for Romanians living in the district of Schei, not being allowed to use the four other entrances.
During the Saxon rule between the 13th and 17th Century, Romanians were forbidden from owning property inside the citadel and in fact were banished to the Schei Quarter which resulted in them building their homes and settling outside the city walls in the Schei Valley.
In addition, they could only enter the city at certain times having to pay a toll at the gate for the privilege of selling their produce inside the citadel.
The Schei Gate now standing, was built in classical Baroque style in 1828, one year after Catherine's Gate was conceived to facilitate access to the Romanian inhabitants of Schei into the fortress.
It was built to replace the old Schei Gate which was heavily damaged by fire.
Built of stone and brick, the gate has three arch-shaped entrances, two smaller ones on each side to facilitate pedestrians and a larger one in the middle for the heightened volume of traffic.
Above each of the side entrances there is an inscription in Latin stating that the gate was built during the reign of Emperor Francis 1st of Austria following his visit to Brasov in 1817.
The Schei district is to the south of the gate and has some really interesting and colourful houses as well as some beautiful scenery either side of the valley.
It's a bit hilly but well worth taking a stroll there! Just take your time and enjoy the views.
Happy holidays!

One of the access points to the old town. Old but nicely renovated.Simple, almost without any architectural ornaments, not very impressive. 5 minutes stop, two pictures and keep walking.

Schei Gate is next to the Ecaterina Gate and was built between 1827 and 1828 with the role of fluidizing the increased traffic in this area. Constructed of stone and brick in the classical style, the Gate of Schei has the form of a triumphal arch with three entrances, a main one of large dimensions in the middle and two shorter entrances to the left and to the right which are intended for pedestrians. The inscription in Latin marks the moment of the construction of the gate as well as the indication that this gate was erected following the visit of Emperor Francis I. in Brasov in 1817.

You will walk through this gate on the way from the old town to the old Romanian neighbourhood. It's pretty old and worth a look.

Strict clean classical-style architecture. Built in the 1820s when Catherine's Gate could not swallow the increasing traffic.

This is one of the city gates to the old town of Brasov. Nothing too ornate and quite a decent reconstruction.
