About
Third biggest Roman ruins in Europe and, off course the biggest in Bulgaria. The therms were built in 2nd century AD and Romans enjoyed there by bathing in freezing cold water, tepid water or hot water. Only a small complex comparing to original is still preserved.

The baths are really ruins of the baths that were. I could not go inside this time as they were closed. However, you can see just about everything as there is an external path around three sides of the ruined structures. This must be one of the most interesting ruins in the region but they are not promoted ! Dubious restoration works detract from the overall effect of spaces. Lots of wandering cats have fun here it seems as there are many. This could be a World Heritage Site if only someone has the vision.

I went to the Roman Thermae in Varna in June 2008. Entry was quite cheap--only 2 Lev for student price, I think--but there is very little information once inside. A guidebook is sold at the front gate for 5 Lev which has lots of great information in it, so I purchased one. However, the guidebook doesn't seem to follow the layout of the site, so it's not all that easy to use while there (but makes a great souvenir!)
I find it surprising that it's (supposedly) the largest Roman ruin in Bulgaria. It was overgrown and not very well promoted, as another reviewer noted, but I found this enjoyable, as I had the place entirely to myself when I went. No other tourists or guards or anything--I was free to wander about the weed- and wildflower-covered ruins on my own, which is a nice break from the busy, crowded tourist areas of Varna during the summer.

Bulgaria doesn't really seem to know how to make the best of the few attractions it does have. If you've been to any of the Roman ruins in Turkey then this will be a disappointment. It's small, not that well preserved and also overgrown.

Intersting toursit attraction.
Build at the end of 2nd century.
Admission price is really low so visiting should not be the problem.
Make sure you follow your gps to the last clue as otherwise it will show you the entrace to the church that is nearby ;)
Sadly could not attach any picuters but it is beautifully iluminated at night and really worth seeing.

These are two large bath complexes which are well worth strolling around. Good historical explanations in English

As my other reviews have noted, I enjoy visiting Roman ruins and am in awe of both their staying power and their geographical dispersion. However, if you're going to this site, best to do your research first in order to appreciate what you're looking at. The site was not protected very well (we could walk and climb over much of it) and some of the perimeter was completely overgrown with grass and weeds. There was scarce literature to explain what you were looking at, save for a sign on each room (for example "furnace room"). If you read up first, maybe take the information with you, it would make the visit more enjoyable.

The site is impressive for its size. You can certainly gauge what it must have been like sizewise. The Baths are in a time warp in terms of presentation though. There are plants growing out of the walls and you get the impression that this site has not been touched for many years. You could pick up bits of tile and carved stone. One assumes that a lot has "disappeared" over the years.
There are signs up to tell you what function took place in which room. But a lot more could be done to really bring the Baths to life.

The low entrance fee makes this worth the visit as the place has not been restored at all. You will not see many tourists here as the majority seem to want to be at the beach. The employee at the entrance is very nice and they have multi language pamphlets for an extra fee. No public restrooms available.

Without paying i managed to see quite a bit of Roman ruins.. the city itself is surrounded by them and built on top of it as well.. without entering a Roman ruin area where there is a entrance fee it is very much possible to see a lot.. Ps: there is a FREE tour starting at the cathedral from 11 am and 6pm that shows you a lot of the city.. (English spoken)

One of the biggest in the Empire it includes far more of the socialising areas than most other baths giving an extra isnight into the Roman culture. The sight is extensive and pretty well maintained. Definitely a superior establishment then and now.
