This rather large house was the home of a Dr Stoyan Chomakov an eminent figure from the national revival period. It has been the summer residence of Tsar Ferdinand.

Now doubled up as a gallery for the Permanent exhibition of the painted Zlatyu Boysdzhiev since 1984.

interior of house multiple paintings of furious Bulgarian artist including The named after painter the zlatyu boysdzhiev upstairs is less elaborate then stambolyan house with its wall frescos. He painted with both hands as he had several strokes and started using his left hand in 1951.The last paining attached shows his painting with his right hand on the left and with his left hand on the right of the paining- significant difference in fine strokes

Also a photo of the painter with The famous city character Milio who statue sits in the main shopping pedestrian street.

An impressive selection of the works of one of the most interesting Bulgarian painters of 20th century (mainly from his second period).
The visit is interesting even if you are not too big art fen. (but not totally indifferent).

Captivating works of art are to be admired. All set against a beautiful backdrop of the fabulous attractive home.

It was fascinating to learn of the reason for the artist’s twin distinct outputs. Before 1951, when he suffered a stroke, his art was dominated with more gentle scenes and portraits. On making a partial recovery he painted with his left hand and his work is infused with much busier and crowded compositions.

These contrasts are seen in for example the grand portrait of Ivan Vazov from 1949 and Prayers series from the early 1970s.

I did enjoy some of Boyadzhiev's early work before he lost his the use of his dominant hand, but the way he persevered with his good hand, his depictions of the poor and his knack for mocking the elite are admirable. I especially enjoyed the portraits he painted of his father both before and after his stroke. One can tell he really understood the man and how to paint his face.

While no one is going to confuse Boyadjiev with Picasso or Cezanne, he was an important figure in Bulgarian art and his works are fascinating ... not only because after suffering a stroke in midlife, he had to start painting left-handed. His scenes of village life in the early- to mid-20th century are vivid and nicely displayed in this period home.

The large scale, colorful and impressionistic representations of largely village life and peasants really arrest your attention. While not of the level of European masters, Boyadzhiev nevertheless draw you in and make you study the story on the canvas. It is an inspiring story that he re-learned to paint with his left hand after being partially paralyzed by a stroke. Part of the multi-site Plovdiv pass - so we chose to visit
