I was just wondering aimlessly around Old Town as I had just arrived into Plovdiv. Plus I was on a tight budget. I stumbled into this building because quite frankly it's gorgeous to look at. The guy seemed a bit perplexed that he was getting visitors, and he seemed more keen on getting back into the garden and read his book, and have his cigarette.

The exhibition spans three floors and is fascinating. The layout is interestingly done and the information is provided in both English and Bulgarian. The history of Plovdiv does seem almightily complicated but they did manage to make it fairly understandable. The place is cheap (like most places in Plovdiv) and is well worth a look at.

Located on a side street near the top of the Renat Tepe hill, the National Exposition Museum (here called Regional Historical Museum) in Plovdiv is surprisingly easy to miss. The streets are small and crowded over, and at the moment the entryway to the passage it is located on is being reconstructed. So, despite being located in one of the most famous buildings in the city, this museum may be difficult to find at first.

Inside, one will be greeted by an empty wooden hall and a list of ticket prices, with doors leading out into the garden, upstairs, and off to the right hand side. I started poking around when a staff member came in from outside to take the €2 entry fee, and promptly return outside after advising me which way to go around the building.

It starts off with an interesting contextual exhibit on Plovdiv's historical makeup, before the upstairs floors launch into Plovdiv and its residents' roles in wider Bulgarian history. It is an interesting tour, but a great deal of background knowledge is assumed, and the information presented can feel somewhat convoluted and difficult to assimilate at times.

What is rather striking about the place, especially on the top few floors, is how quiet it is. It is a fair way from the centre of the old town, but the area itself is not particularly quiet; yet I was the only one there until I left and saw a few others enter. Given how old the building was, and the groaning noises made by the woodwork expanding on the summer afternoon, the museum did feel slightly eerie.

Still, there is a wide range of interesting historical information available about Plovdiv, the house, and the residents of both with their roles in Bulgarian history detailed immensely. Not only that, but it felt a lot different to the usual kinds of museums one would normally visit in this part of the world.

The house of Dimitar Georgiadi was built in 1946 – 1848.
Its owner, a rich merchant from Plovdiv, offered it as a dowry for his daughter Elena when she married Dimitar Georgiadi.

Today it hosts an exhibition of the History Museum about the Bulgarian National Revival.
It covers that period by presenting a rich collection of original objects, weapons and photographs.

I had extra time on my hands today in Plovdiv and after seeing this house from the outside yesterday when all the museums are closed (Monday) and reading the reviews I decided to walk back and take a visit. Entrance is 3bgn and a lovely stroll through each room of the house was a delightful way to spend about 40 mins. Most of the exhibits had English subs titles and the focus was of the rich social history of Plovdiv in the 19th century.

One of the major museums in Plovdiv. Shows the history of the town and is near the well known gate Hisar Kapia. There are nice pubs in the area.

In this beautiful house built in 1848 for a wealthy merchant resides an engaging exhibition covering the period of Ottoman occupation and the movement of liberation.

It was interesting to learn that the house was gifted by the merchant to his daughter on her marriage to Dimitar Georgiadi.

An ornate facade with colourful grand styling and features makes for a striking first view. Inside are many gorgeous rooms with high décor. All present an elegant backdrop for the account of the eventful tumultuous times covered.

Been there while an Erasmus+ cultural project. The place was nice with a lot of historical heritage, but quite small. This place did not impress me enough to call it more than average. It was nice that they recognize ISIC discount though.

There is an interesting presentation of history of the Bulgarian struggle for independence from the Ottoman empire and for independence for the Bulgarian Orthodox church from the Greek Orthodox church. But most of the notes are in Cyrillic, only. If thy want to make an impression for hosting the European Cultural Year in 2019 they should make their presentation intelligible to a wider, Latin-script reading public. I did get a charge out of a painting of a fight inside a church with Greek Orthodox and would-be Bulgarian Orthodox beating on each other with candlesticks, etc. The building, itself, is worth the price of admission: another mansion built in the mid-nineteenth century by a wealthy merchant.
