Next to the gymnasium is park with former seat of government.
School is quite large. Around are some statues, theatre and an music school. Next to the school is park and a school hostel.

This beautiful building in "neo-antique" style was erected in 1836, and it was the first monumental high school in Serbia during the reign of Duke Miloš Obrenović. Well preserved and still functional- best way to grasp spirit of Serbian educational system.

The building makes much more beautiful the city center. Kragujevac as been the first capital of new era Serbia, after the total liberation of turkish 500 years suppression, gave the tone of national, spiritual and educational Renaissance .

One of the hallmarks of town of Kragujevac, built in prosperous time for Kragujevac, in central Serbia in that time newly liberated from Turks. It was founded by Knez Milos Obrenovic. It is on the so called square of pupils (Djacki trg). I graduated there on 1998, but never forgot beautiful time I spent there. In my opinion it's must see in Kragujevac, especially cause its near to the National museum and etno museum Amidzin konak which should be visited.

Located in Kragujevac, Serbia. Founded in 1833, the school is the oldest Serbian high school south of the Sava - Danube line. It looks beautiful inside as it does outside. I always loved the smell of old books in the library.

As the first gymnasium on the Serbian territory (first Serbian was in Sremski Karlovci, then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire), it was an honor to graduate in this school! I spent 4 beautiful years in this school. Sideward, I would recommend this as a historical monument, as the gymnasium was established in 1835! In the ceremonial hall there is the statue of Milos Obrenovic, founder of this school. Many Serbian great minds attended this school.

When in Kragujevac, it is expected from you to know where and what is the First High School of Kragujevac, or better known as The First Gymnasium / Institute of Kragujevac.
It is a national cultural intitution due to the fact that it was the first high-school in liberated Serbia (from the turkish Otoman empire), officialy established in 1835! It reflects the national will for liberty, education and democratic society because many of the historically important persons graduated here. That is why this school is cultural treasure and people of Kragujevac are proud of it. There are many anecdotes related to it, and it is working nowadays!
The building itself is very well perserved and nice to see- it has the same style typical of 19th century European architecture, and walking through its corridors and entering the classrooms you can transport yourself back in the days.
In the backyard there are National museum and gallery which hold some of the most representive pieces of Serbian 20th century paintings and also antique tradional perserved furniture, armor, coins etc., and old traditional building (typical of Turkich architecture in Serbia) owned by the count Miloš Obrenović's assistant- Amidža. It is a rare perserved building constructed in the Turkish city style so it is very interesting to see!

Definetely a place to go if you are in Kragujevac!!! You can't miss it.
