We got here on the #2 bus from the crntral square in Niš. A friendly passenger from the bus told us to get off at the end of the line and walk up a hill to reach the entrance. The wooded path to the memorial is dedicated to the partsan fighters of World War II. We were practically alone with the three towering sculptures on a Winter Monday afternoon. Under gloomy skies we contemplated the unknown number of men, women and children executed by the Nazis here.

Love to see that finally people are taking care of this great park with monuments. It was a may 1st holiday and I remember from the past mountains of garbage and fire burning after barbecue not extinguished. Now it’s much better. I saw young people taking care of garbage. I saw so much sport activities. Simply great.

This heartbreaking monument is a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Nazi persecutions perpetrated during the Second World War. It is regarded that more than 30.000 people of various ethnic, religious and political background have been killed and buried at this place. If you're in Niš and you'd like to go outside of its urban core, and you'd like to get to know the history of this city, then this would be the right place worth a visit!

A 10 minute drive southwest of the concentration camp is Bubanj. The resistance of the prisoners at the concentration camp led to the Germans beginning executions at Bubanj. Women and children were taken to Belgrade and killed in gas chambers. Jewish men and boys over 14 were shot here. Truck loads of prisoners would be taken at a time. This location was fenced in with barbed wire and surrounded by German guards. The prisoners would dig their own graves and then be shot from 10 meters away.
This monument serves as a reminder of the Serbian people's courage and defiance toward their enemies. Here, during the mass executions, an unknown prisoner raised his fist in the air in front of the shooters. This incident inspired the monuments that are here today.
The verses of Nis poet Ian Vuckovic are carved on the side of the frieze monument in Bubanj: "We were shot but never killed, and never subdued. We crushed the darkness and paved a way for the sun."

Bubanj Memorial Park is a place located in the surroundings of Nis, the most important Southern Serbia city, where infamous mass murder execution took place in the 2nd World War. In fact, this place is totally related to the Red Cross Nazi Concentration Camp, which is located in Nis. Really, if you are an history-lover, these two places are very interesting to know the 2nd World War in Serbia.
The Bubanj Memorial is located in Bubanj Mountain, and the center of the memorial are 3 big cuffs, that represent a mother, a father and a kind or the resistance and the fight against the occupation. Really emotive! A place to remember the past, a place to not forget!

These structures are representative of the prisoners from the concentration camp. Very symbolic of them having been taken to the woods and killed. The structures appear as fists in defiance.

Unfortunately I have never heard or read anything about this World War 2 massacre of over 10,000 City residents by the Germans. The park is peaceful and leafy and in its midst there are 3 enormous fists raised to the sky. A reminder that war is devastating.

Even though there are hardly any people this place is cool. The style is one of a kind. It'll take a brisk 30min walk to get there.

A nice break from the hectic city and a complementary must see if you have been to the concentration camp. Accessible on public buses
