The Romanesque Church of St Chrysogonus got its name after one of the patron saints of Zadar, and it was consecrated by Zadar bishop Lampridius in 1175. It was built on the site of the Roman emporium and the Church of St Anthony the Hermit from the 6th century.

The Church of St Chrysogonus had several adaptations and enlargements over the centuries, however, today this is the only part remaining of the former great Medieval Benedictine Monastery which was destroyed in World War II.

It is located near the Sea Gate in the Old Town and we did not visit the interior. The entrance door was tightly closed and there were no signs in the surrounding area, so we were unable to obtain information such as opening hours. If it is open, bonus. In the square in front of the church stood a lonely statue of St. Chrysogonus.

Don’t waste your time coming over and over to try to visit this temple.
It only opens for concerts. Instead, admire the façade, the exterior side wall and the apse.

A large romanic basilica tucked away in a small square near the Sea Gate. Well worth a look if you're passing by.

A monastery church and male Benedictine monastery from 1175.
Besides the church there are remains of a Benedictine monastery from the Middle Ages which was destroyed in World War II, as well as the bell-tower (started in 1485 but never completed).

I liked the place, very old and the architecture is interesting. It is also very big, usually, I only found relatively small churches around Zadar but this one is different.

I found this to be a nice old church.

It has a different feel and shape to the others churches I have seen.

The architecture is beautiful.

Between the Sea Gate and the market place, you will find this building. I loved the architecture! The building is really pretty big and intricately carved. Well worth the free wander by.

While churches tend to be covered in ornaments and decorative statues, St. Krševan is not. The walls are simple stone with almost no ornaments, and the only decor are the altars with its typical statues. I feel, that this simplicity reflects Jesus' teachings more than the grandiose churches made famous around the world.
