This is yet another proof of the presence of the Venetian Empire in Croatia. Designed by Venetian architect Michele Sanmicheli in 1543, the Land Gate is the most dramatic of the four still standing around Zadar’s historic centre.

This gate was designed in the Renaissance style, with the snarling Venetian lion over an effigy of St Chrysogonus on horseback. One can also see symbols of the city on either side.

On the far side of the land gate lies Foša, a narrow channel which once fed Zadar’s moat and is now a small harbour crowded with pleasure crafts.
You can also find plenty of parking in this area – at least in May.

As an aside, we really enjoyed our time here, Zadar is one of Dalmatia’s larger cities, but it did not feel that way and has lots of interesting architecture. First settled by the Illyrians, the Romans, then Venetians, heavily bombed during WWII and held under siege during the Homeland War. We only spent two nights in Zadar – in hindsight, we could have used another day.

Really beautiful atmosphere in Zadar, will come back again, for sure. The old town is nice with small streets packed with tourists, nice terraces and amazing artizanal shops! The church wasn't open to visit.

We walked through Roman ruins to see and hear the Sea Organ and the sun dial. Also climbed up the bell tower at EUR3 to see a panaromic view of Zadar. Recommend going up there for postcard picture perfect photographs. It gets windy up there so bring a jacket. There are quite a few steps up, so you need to be physically prepared please. There are many souvenir stalls and interesting restaurants at Zangy Zadar. Enjoyed this beautiful city on the Delightful Dalmatian coast of charming Croatia.

Zadar was great to visit, even with our 11 year old boy who hates walking. Enough to see, even outside the season. Combine it with ice cream;)

We walked through the gates several times on our way to the beach and to visit the park outside the city walls. The gateway is impressive in its scale and a number of details are worth looking at.

Zadar's Land City Gate was built by the Venetians when they controlled the city and for many centuries was the main entrance into the Old Town. The winged lion sculpture above the large archway proudly symbolises the Republic of Venice.
