- CatharineBOttawa, Canada1,641 contributionsOld Town’s Main StreetAnd I thought Norway and Switzerland were expensive. This wide street that crosses the Old Town from east to west between the two city gates is known as the Stradun or Placa. It was constructed in the 12th century by draining and filling in the marshy channel that separated the island of Ragusa from the mainland. This street was rebuilt in the current, much more straightforward style after the 1667 earthquake. We entered through the Pile Gate and encountered the Big Onofrio’s fountain at one end and the Sponza palace at the other. Even though the shops and restaurants were expensive, it was definitely worth a stroll and probably one of the few free things you can do in Dubrovnik. Along with shops there were a number of points of interest along the street including Onofrio’s Fountain, Saint Saviour's Church, Statue of Marin Drzic and the Bell Tower. It is a pedestrian only street and undoubtedly the most important pedestrian axis of the city from where all the steep alleys begin to one side, and others towards the sea with a slight slope. The best way to enjoy the Stradun is to walk up and down the street – get there early, as it can get extremely crowded once all the cruise ships arrive. Another nice place to enjoy views of the street is to get to the top of Dubrovnik Old Town Walls from where you can see the Stradun (as well as the rest of the town) from a bird’s -eye perspective.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 December 2023
- tinaNtravelSan Jose, California2,009 contributionsMain street in old townThis is the main street in the walled city of Dubrovnik and of course a must see. In fact, it is probably impossible to visit Dubrovnik and not see it. There are churches, a bell tower, many souvenir shops, some restaurants and ice cream stores along this main street. It is quite beautiful with the large, polished stones, likely polished from millions of people walking on them over hundreds of years. There are many stairways up on the left side (if your back is to Pile Gate). Be sure to walk up several flights to reach one walkway that is filled with restaurants side to side for almost the entire length of the walkway. On the right side of Stradun are more churches, many other restaurants, souvenir shops and other places to see. It is fun to just walk through the winding streets and staircases and explore.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 January 2024
- CPaM68Texas755 contributionsThe main street in the old townStradun, the main street in Old Town Dubrovnik, starts as you enter through the Pile Gate and runs all the way to the harbor. At the start of the street is a square with a fountain, the old Franciscan Monastery, and stairs which access the walkway on top of the walls. (We actually took a walk around the walls, which offered a fantastic view of the city, before we explored the town.) There are churches, museums, candy shops, ice-cream shops, clothing shops, souvenir shops, bakeries, open-air cafes, and bars on both sides of the street. The street is only about a quarter of a mile long and the crowd of people can be very heavy at times during the day when the cruise ships are in. Streets to the right or left take you to more restaurants and charming shops, but it seems most tourists just stay on the main walkway and window shop. Fortunately, the street is very wide. Looking closely, you might see the chips in the walls of the buildings from the war in the 1990s. (PaM)Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 March 2024
- Ben FBloomington, Indiana1,817 contributionsCome in March for Fewer CrowdsMy strolls up and down Stradun in Old Town Dubrovnik were exciting and meaningful. It’s the main artery from which the many quaint alleys of the town stem. There was a bit of construction when I visited in March, but despite it, I would still extremely recommend traveling here in March when the crowds are fewer. Access Stradun by entering the walled city via Pile Gate or the marina on the city’s east side.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 19 April 2024
- Joyce JLiverpool, United Kingdom1,168 contributionsVery impressive main street in the walled cityThe main street of Dubrovnik Old Town which you enter from the Harbour or via Pile Gate is impressive. The street gives such a feeling of history and the power of impressive architecture and you feel like you've stepped back in time. From the cobbled street to the bell tower, the church's architecture is stunning. Even though a majority of the buildings are now cafes & shops you still get a feeling of how it used to be. I understand that this was also used as the backdrop for Game of Thrones so it dies attract a lot of attention for that reason too. As you walk down you have to look up at the buildings as well as down the streets leading off to see how the old town was the main dominating powerful street of the city.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 April 2024

While is is very commercialised in terms of gift shops, restaurants and ice cream parlours, it is full of charm. I would strongly recommend rambling into the tiny side streets and allow yourself to get lost.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 April 2024

- SimeyWimeyWhitstable, United Kingdom893 contributionsMain streetNice selection of shops and bars line this street. Lots of side streets to explore and a great spot for people watching. Nearly slipped a few times on the polished surface. Look closely and you'll spot security enforcers making sure the dress code of no swimwear, no tops off, no littering or stopping to eat food and a few other rules are adhered to. The town is immaculate and photogenic. Look out for the water fountain, tourist information and the head you're challenged to stand on!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 May 2024

Lots of little streets and shops. Souvenir shops, retail, restaurants, and more. Historical sites line it as well. Everybody will walk along the most famous street in Dubrovnik but it holds little interesting besides the souvenir shops and some expensive boutiques. The best place to stop for coffee is at the end, Gradska Kavana with an elegant raised terrace, reasonable prices and friendly service. If you are looking for a lunch restaurant just walk further in and you will arrive on their other terrace with views over the Old Port.

A perfect tourist site with history mixed in with specialty shops, museums, and eateries . Perfect to watch people. As you enter from the Pile Gates, period costume buskers and musicians will sure to entertain you. Street is not long, but it packs a lot in a short distance to easily walk up and down.

We visited Dubrovnik's Old Town in the evening and it was lovely, however pretty crowded. The next day we decided to go there before 8 AM and it was totally worth it. No tourist crowds, not even cafes were open, only a bakery near one of the entrances. I'd suggest doing that if you want to see the architecture and experience the atmosphere quietness of the old town.

Entered the Old City at the end of Stradun near St Francis Church. Loved my visit there. It’s the kind of place you can walk relaxed looking at the shops selling artisan or traditional items to buy as a keepsake. Lots of nice restaurants and coffee shops also.
The heart of the old city - it’s widest street and leading at the bottom to the departure points for the boats to Lokrum Island. Love the pace. Great place.

The Stradun is the main street through the heart of Dubrovnik's Old Town. It's not really possible to avoid it if you're in the old town, and it's crowded but wide enough that, at least when we visited, it didn't feel oppressive. The entire city is closed to vehicles, so you can walk safely anywhere, but the Stradun is fun to traverse the length of, lined mainly with souvenir and fun shops. When it's less crowded, you can see end to end, as it isn't all that long. We enjoyed looking around and exploring and found ourselves on the Stradun multiple times.

Stradun constitutes the Main Street in the old city, paved with some of the shiniest slippery limestone you will ever see.
In the day it’s a useful orientation point, by night some of the cities more interesting busking can be witnessed from classical music duo’s to owl handlers and a group of men blowing horns and clacking ratchets!
Don’t miss the little balancing stone just outside the friars monastery either.
Bookmarked by Big Onofrio’s fountain at one end and the Sponza palace at the other, it’s definitely worth a stroll.

Main street of the old town filmed 24/7 by a Croatian TV channel. Pedestrians, children, tourists and the city's many cats stroll there until late in the evening. A few branded boutiques but a little expensive for my taste.

Hi- i have an odd question- does anyone know the measurement of the stradun street sign on the walls or the size of any major street sign in old town? I'm trying to get a replica created for a gift and need to know the length and width of the street signs in old town! Thanks!
Written 27 August 2021
I'll be in Dubrovnik in a week. Let me know which sign interests you and I'll take a picture of it for you. I don't have anything with which to measure, but I can estimate the size. Please let me know if this is helpful.

Hello, I would like to know about excess of tourists and very high temperatures in the first week of July. Is that a very crowded and warm period, requiring lots of patience? Would you recommend Croatia with kids (5 year old boy)? Thank you very much.

Think in terms of 28-30C.plenty of tourists in the spots you would expect ie Dubrovnik, Split etc. But lots of smaller towns an coastal areas you can visit which will have less people. Lots of little rocky bays with pebble beaches where small children can splash and play. Go for it, the whole coast is stunning !

Hi: Can you tell me how do I get to your hotel from LIM airport? By shuttle bus, taxi or----and how much will cost for each person and how long will take? Thank you so much :):)
Written 14 January 2015
Dubrovnik Čilipi Airport has the code: DBV (not LIM). assuming that you mean to travel to DBV, as other have said transfers take 30-40 minutes and there are scheduled bus services from the Airport to the town. Of course there are taxis too, but I don't know the prices.
However, Dubrovnik Airport does not handle many flights - I was there at Christmas and the schedule for the day was less than ten flights. So don't expect buses to run every 10 minutes.
Also beware of the Bora wind, which I believe can blow at any time of the year. Because of the high and exposed site of DBV Airport when the Bora wind blows then flights stopped. This happened to us on December 29. British Airways bussed us all the way to Split Airport - that's 4 hours by road and delayed our departure by almost 7 hours.
Much of Croatia is a long thin country bounded by the sea on one side and mountains on the other side. There aren't any motorways in the south and it takes a long time to drive from one part to the next. If your flight lands or takes off from Sarajevo or Split then be prepared for a long slow transfer.
Croatia is a lovely country and Dubrovnik is a "must see" which is worth 2 or 3 days of your time. After that get to Mostar (in Bosnia) and Montenegro.
