Tourist boats stopping for 15 minutes don't bring much life to the small port of Bozica, where fishing seems still to be a livelihood. I bought an ice cream and went wandering to find early green figs, smokva ripe for picking, luckily from a tree on the street, not somebody's garden. If you want to support local life buying olive oil or wine bring cash.

This island was the first one we visited on our tour of the Elaphitic Islands. It was very quiet and many places were shut. In fact there were relatively few people about, but we did find a cafe open for coffee. I was left wondering why we had come here.

Too quiet for me. Visiting there seemed pointless. We visited on a cruise to the islands but this particular island was a non event. Lopud is worth going to and is very close by. Do not take children. They will not hank you

We chose Sipan for a family holiday for a quiet getaway with the option of visiting Dubrovnik.
We had a wonderful time! We stayed in a house in Sipanska Luka (House Apnea which sleeps 8), Sipanska, is the largest town on the island and is quiet and beautiful with three bar cafes and 3 restaurants. It has 2 shops, one of which is open every day and sells pretty much all you'll need for self catering other than fresh fish and the mark up is reasonable considering the lack of competition. Remember to keep the receipt if buying beer as there is a deposit on the bottles which also promotes recycling.
There is a few concrete benches by the green where one or two locals sell produce most mornings between 0730 and 1130. Olive oil, plum brandy, tomatos and veg can be bought here at reasonable prices. There is also a house that sells oil and local spirits by the church but it is more expensive but better packaged for gifts.
While this is a sleepy town with virtually no car traffic it is a stopping point for boats ranging from small Sunsail yachts to 30 passenger cruise boats. This meand that the restaurants that are normally pretty empty during the day can be fully booked in the evening. It also seemed to us that the menus and prices also reflected this so we didn't bother with these but preferred to chill out at the "No Name" cafe with free wifi and reasonable priced drinks Good iced coffee here!
We love swimming and snorkelling and there are loads of fish and even the odd octopus
You can walk to the viewpoint from Sipanska though it is best done at the cooler parts of the day, we went to watch the sunset. Wear good shoes (not the flip flops my daughter wore) and there is a steepish scramble for the last 100m or so. It takes about an hour each way.
There is a bus to Sudarad that leaves to meet the various Sudarad ferries and it costs 15 Kuna. Sudarad has a couple of restaurants, a small shop and a cafe. You can also hire bikes and canoes here for reasonable rates. We loved the cafe here with tables almost on the beach, the food and service is great and they also rent out the canoes!
Sudarad has much more ferries than Sipnska (which only has one early morning ferry to Dubrovnik in July nad August) and also has regular invasion of trip boats that deposit a crowd for 30 minutes before taking them away somewhere else, providing some amusing people watching before relaxing back into the normal peacefulness.
So day trips to Dudrovnik or morning market trips to Dubrovnik Harbour (Gruz) are easily done but I always enjoyed retruning to the calm of Sipan. Great Place.

We fell in love with Šipan pretty much instantly. We stayed here for a couple of nights doing sea-kayaking and cycling. It is a world away from the hectic, touristy Dubrovnik (which was great too- in a different way). There are two little villages one one each side of the island; Šipanska Luka and Suđurađ (where we stayed). Both are ancient little towns, with a few restaurants and not a lot else! We stayed in a local guesthouse which made it's own olive oil and wine (both delicious), we ate in a couple of different restaurants (can't remember names!) and they were both very nice. We enjoyed chilling out after dinner in the square, watching all the locals playing heated games of bowls! I have read a few of the reviews whining that there is nothing to do and it was awful. If you hate peace and quiet, beautiful scenery, seeing the real Croatia, eating nice food and are generally soul-less, by all means stay away and find somewhere with a water park and a McDonalds!!

We decided to use the Jadrolinija ferry (not the tourist boats) to get to the Eliphite islands. As well as being far cheaper (19 kuna Dubrovnik to Lopud - 10am start journey, 13 kuna Lopud to Sipan, 19 kuna Sipan to Dubrovnik main harbour, not old town), you can spend more time on them, although at this time of year, can only do 2 of the 3 in one day due to ferry times. We spent nearly 3 hours here and really needed more to do it justice. For those who say there was nothing to do, well it did look rarher 'closed down' when we arrived, although quite charming, we soon found that there was more to see if you look for it and if the time was available.
Very pretty around the harbour and behind some ruins were some little streets (not for cars) with lovely wine shop, and then houses with elderly locals selling their own produce from outside their doors...friut, fruit brandies and olive oil that we saw.
We went back and around the harbour, and followed signs for a restaurant that led uphill for quite a way. Than found a kobano, little restaurant that looked like it probably doubled as the workers house. It had stunning views looking down on the sea and harbour. The waitress was alovely and very smiley, but the snacks we ordered were not that great. The bread was hard. Wine, cheese, cured meats and olives were all fine though. They told us about about a beach down the steps from there. We went down the steps and found a little concreted area between rocks were the sea could be accessed. You need shoes to swim in as there are many sea urchins on the rocks everywhere, so need some protection. We also had shorkels and masks and so enjoyed some time around this area. It was so calm and peaceful and the waters were very calm there. Unfortunately we had had several days of bad weather and so the waters were slightly murkier than usual, but we could tell that usually they must be crystal clear. Saw a few fish, lots of sea urchins and lots of rocks at the bottom. Very pleasant, although cannot rival some where like the red sea. Very easy for a novice snorkeller here.
We didn't have time to go to the village at the other side of the island as the buses wouldn't be back before our ferry, but tickets for the bus can be purchased at a little booth opposite the little jetty you step on to from the ferry and the bus is to the left of the jetty. There were winegroves I would have liked to visit and we didn't have time for all the other attractions that others talk about.
My main recommendation for the islands is to give yourselves more time than you think, so you can explore and unlock their individual beauty, or you will not fully appreciate what they have to offer. If you want funfairs and aqua parks, them islands are not for you. They will give you natural baeuty, lots of walking to do, drinks watching the world go by, and natural quiet swimming areas.

Many travel to Sipan, and nearly all spend less than an hour walking round the tiny & very retty village of Sudarad. For less than £2 each you can jump on the awaiting bus & see the valley full of vines & vegetables, and end up in Sipanska Luka. The larger village has a bigger port, more restaurants, a beach & plenty of things to snap your camera at.
Remember that Sipan is more than the hamlet that's just off the gangplank, and you'll be pleasantly surprised to see an island full of frendly people & fine food.

A week on Sipan Island coulld be just what the doctor ordered. I never imagined I could find a place in Europe that was more beautiful than the Greek Islands, but this place is even more scenic and attractive. It is not for lovers of wild nights out and raving until the early morning hours, but it is for lovers of beauty, calm, clear blue seas, spectacular scenery, and great food and drink among friendly people (especially if you invest the time to learn a handful of Croatian words - as we did.)

Stayed for 5 days at hotel sipan which has an ATM. Lovely hotel with comfortable clean rooms and friendly helpful staff.Sipanska Luka is a harbour with 4 restaurants and 2 bars which get their business from the hotel but mainly from the island hopping yachts that moor at night. Great place for a total switch off holiday. It is possible to hire bikes, go walking and go sea kayaking for the more energetic and there is a diving centre. The beach is pebble/sand a 5 minute walk from the hotel and you swim in clear blue water.
You can travel from Dubrovnik to Sipanska Luka daily via the G&V line ferry or by the more frequent Jadrolinija ferries to Sudurad (the other port) via the other 2 Islands (lopud and kolocep) take the 10 minute bus to Sipanska Luka which terminates by the hotel. Sudurad has it's own restaurants and beaches which we didn't try but we did walk from Sudurad to Sipanska.
An idyllic location which we will visit again.
If staying in Sudurad suggest Hotel Bosica which has swimming pool and reclining seats on its own beach.

We took the Ferry from Dubrovnik to 2 other islands (can't remember" and then to Sipan. We planned poorly and didn't get the proper Ferry times ahead of time. We rented bikes in SIpan for 25 kuna each and biked across the island. It is a lot of untouched farm land. We got to the other side to have dinner at Taurus (sp?). It's normally a very casual laid back place but we were in a hurry to get back for the last ferry of the day. The owner was very nice and made us a quick cold plate and salad. Everything was very fresh although we thought it a bit pricey for Croatia... We made it back in time. There are 2 hills that are "challenging".

Is there a taxi service on Sipan? I am staying in self catering acomm and will need to get luggage to villa from port as I have a young child in toe.
Written 24 June 2018
Sorry, only seeing this now. We stayed in the village and the owners met us off the boat. It’s a very friendly small place and if you go to one of the bars and ask for help, I’m sure you will get a lift to your villa. It’s a beautiful, laid back place and very quiet at night. Be sure to use the local ferry to visit Lopud for a day trip. Timetables are at the port . Also, take the little bus to the other side of the island. Lovely restaurant and a great swimming area with diving board if you go left off the bus. Enjoy !

Can you get a taxi from one side of the island to the other. I know the bus service stops about 8.

Who knows what the last boat/ ferry Goes to sipan in the summer. We are landing at 19.00 in Dubrovnik
Written 26 December 2017
It's better to ask to Boat's Capitain.
The excursions leave the old port of Dubrovinik and it's possible to book the trip in advanced, and have your question answered in the day or before.

What times are ferries to and from Sipian if we want to visit Dubrovnik?
Written 17 August 2017
Ah, I see now that you may be staying on Sipan! If I remember correctly, the ferry stays at Sudurad overnight, so guess the first one leaves Sipan around 0900. From my previous reply, I guess you could get back to Sipan for 1820.
