- macedonboyGlasgow, United Kingdom1,79,496 contributionsClassic Old TownA very walkable and compact old town which traces its history back to Roman times. Some of the best times to see are Diocletian’s Palace, the Peristyle of the palace, Saint Domnius Cathedral, Jupiter's Temple, the Golden Gate and the port area. Just outside of the old city is Diocletian’s Dream, a much more modern VR experience of old split. A great place to visit if you like old towns. It has everything you’d expect such as narrow streets, ancient buildings, defensive towers & walls and lots of atmosphere.Visited May 2023Written 30 May 2023

She was so knowledgeable, thoughtful, kind and funny! She is an amazing guide and carefully ensures every detail is taken care of.... She is so clearly passionate about her work and her pride in her beautiful country makes her tour so personalized. I highly recommend.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 June 2023

- Ginges_revengeBrisbane, Australia4,699 contributionsGreat picturesque old town on the harbour. This was an excellent little old town mixed in with being so close to a beautiful harbor. It was great on a sunny day. You only need a day to see all of it but it was very nice to see. It has the classic small streets, historical monuments and buildings and lovely little squares. A lot to see around every corner.Visited March 2023Written 16 July 2023
- Brooklet425Staunton, Virginia287 contributionsAmazing piece of historyI'm glad that we visited Split in the winter. We had heard story after story about the crowds of tourists in the summer months, but I can honestly say that in winter it was fantastic. There were enough people around so that we didn't feel like we were in a ghost town, but yet we felt like we almost had the place to ourselves. Most stores, restaurants, and museums were open in the winter too. Old Split is mostly within the walls of Diocletian's Palace. We spent 2 full days just walking around this area, trying to see every part of it. It's not a very organized old town, in the sense that you can tell that it has had pieces built and rebuilt over the course of 2000 years. Today there are stores, restaurants, apartments, hotels, museums, churches, etc throughout the whole place. Some streets are wide and some are so small that 2 people can barely walk through at the same time. There were several ancient palaces, large squares, an old clock tower, military defense towers, and more. There were parts that were in ruins, and other parts that have been well maintained and/or reconstructed over time. I love history, and walking through these old streets really gives you a sense of what it may have been like living there in the past. I highly recommend visiting, and taking the time to walk down each street. Walk in and out of each gate to the complex too - they're all different. We were told that in the summer, its elbow to elbow with people there. So I'd recommend visiting in the off season if you really want the chance to be able to take it all in.Visited January 2023Written 17 August 2023

I would highly recommend taking a walking tour so they can point out and explain the building and history of old Split. Lots of restaurants and bars to also enjoy, however when I was there in February not all restaurants opens for trade yet.Visited March 2023Travelled soloWritten 27 August 2023
- Sandy DMumbai, India694 contributionsBeautiful! So different from the rest of CroatiaWhat really stands out is the architecture of the old Split area. Appears very Roman with narrow, cobbled lanes. And majority of the buildings are painted in this greyish white hue. The market has numerous shops including the big brands. Incidentally, the cottage we are staying in is over 100 years old!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 September 2023

It is a fantastic place full of very beautiful streets with bars, restaurants and shops. Also, most of the streets are from old Diocletian's Palace, where the perystile is nowadays an amazing square, you can see some ruins of the palace, the gates of the palace are gates to enter to the old town, the temples (like Jupiter one) are little chapels or churches, the Roman decumanus is one of the main streets, the catacombs of the palace are underground zone with an archeological museum and a market. Really amazing zone! Also, you can see some buildings built in Middle Ages, which are very well integrated with the Roman old part like the Cathedral, where you can go up to the bell tower and see wonderful views of the old town and surroundings, or some palaces. Very curious old town! Top in the country and in the world!Visited October 2022Travelled with friendsWritten 28 September 2023

- Eva TUnited Kingdom1,388 contributionsGreat place, great history, nice peopleBefore we travel anywhere we are researching what we would like to see and the list is usually long and we never accomplish our goal to visit all places. So we usually take the list with us and just walking the street and see a few places. This is what we did also during our holiday in Croatia - Split and other towns. We found Split full of beautiful buildings and architecture, with amazing history, when you look carefully there are so many beautiful details around the old town. Don't concentrate only on Diocletian's Palace which was overcrowded during our visit. We wanted to visit the cathedral which is the second oldest Catholic cathedral in the world but didn't manage it. The town has plenty good restaurants - Konoba and we visited a few but we tend to go away from the centre as usually these are overpriced and we are looking for local cuisine. If you want relax and a bit of quiet don't choose accommodation in the centre (which is vibrant and loud) but a bit further. We did walk from our accommodation about 20 minutes to the centre and we felt very safe. Unfortunately I got cold from air condition which we used as the heat was unbelievable, especially in the night we were not able to proper sleep. So we will definitely come again sometime in the future.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 October 2023

Walking around in the old city are very nice, there are a lot to discover and see. But it is crowded even if we was there late in the season. But it is worth a visit for sure!

Avoid. Not a reliable tour provider. Schedule tour of old city for our family. Even confirmed the week before and Maja was a no show. We tried to contact her several times and waited a the designated meeting spot for some time. She finally responded that "she forgot" about our tour. We wasted our afternoon waiting and could not find another tour in such short notice.

Old town is great except when cruise ships are docked. The crowds make it almost unbearable. Go early or late and avoid the crush.

Great place to stay in Split. If you are not into bar life, make sure you stay a bit further from the sea since that is where the most bars and music is.

We are in Split as I write this review. I have never seen so many people doing nothing of value! There are some historic sights, large ships and tons of incredibly overpriced eating and drinking establishments. Masses of people weaving through the maze of ancient streets. Doing absolutely nothing. I think Split a good location to film he next zombie movie. Split makes me really think of why I am going on my next vacation.

As much as we enjoyed Split, the night we arrived there, we were caught in a terrible storm while camping and didn't stay as long as we originally intended to. However, I do remember what I think was one of the main "piazzas" in the town. It was full of beautiful things to buy - mostly carved out of wood.
We found the entire Dalmatian Coast, right down to Dubrovnik and beyond, to Kotor, absolutely beautiful. You won't be sorry going there.

Hello, i’m off to Split next week with my two children, aged 14 & 9.
Mr brother got married In Dubrovnik in 2016 and we all had the most incredible time there. We stayed in the old town in July & enjoyed visits to the islands etc.
We’ve opted for Split in the hope that we get to see more of this beautiful country.
I’d value recommendations please?
We’re on a budget (like most of us) so would like to make use of buses etc. again, all ideas & experience truly valued.
We are renting an apartment very close to the old town & bus station.
Thank you in advance, Nikki

Nikki, we had a kitchen in our appartment and only ate once. We were located just to the south of the market area just outside the old city. There are a couple of supermarkets in this area and things like prepared lasagne are a good option with fresh salad. We walked everywhere.

Hi we have booked a holiday to babel kuk in dubrovnik how ever I am now beginning to wonder if we should have gone to split as we don't really like too much history but like a pretty marina with a bustling front with plenty of shopspace and restaurants with plenty of activities action packed do you think we aught to see if we could move how booking or what

Sorry to be so late as I don't normally check in unless I am writing a review which is less these days.
This is a nice city for a short stay but while there check out the surrounding cities that have historical value especially those that were at war in Serbia and Croatia. Make sure you have a guide however.

Hi, we are thinking of Split as an option for a week or two in the summer, and was wondering how it compares to Dubrovnik, which had a cosmopolitan, cool vibe in places and was good for vegetarians - and for a week's stay. We are also keen on historical sites and day trips to places nearby and were wondering if this is possible in Split, as well. Any info or advice would be really helpful, thanks.

Hi Chris,
in my opinion you can see much more if you're based in Split. Dubrovnik is far away from everything else in Croatia. From Split is much easier to reach amazing national parks (Krka-amazing waterfalls, Paklenica-beautiful rocks, Plitvice lakes) also great cities like Trogir (30min drive or less), Sibenik (1h) Zadar (2,5h) or even Dubrovnik (3-3,5h). I wouldn't stay in Dubrovnik (which is beautiful but sometimes heavily overpriced) unless you are planning to go to Montenegro.
I would say rent a car and stay in Split or one of the neighbour cities. Much easier to see a lot of history and great views.
Mike
