The museum was founded in 1820 on the initiative of Francis I, emperor of Austria. He had visited the newly annexed area in 1818 and had been impressed with the immense amount of classical material in the area. The museum outgrew its original quarters, and...More

There's a lot to see here but it all seems kind of crowded. If you're into history and seeing old ruins and artifacts, it's a must-see, but otherwise there are better museums to visit.

Not sure if it is worth your time visiting. Went there with my boyfriend and it was a 20minutes visit at most. Very limited collection of display items and the descriptions were mostly in Croatian and without any English translations.

We were amazed at the collection outside with sarcophagi from as far back as the 1st century. Huge monuments, mosaics, columns, etc. Inside are coins, tools, jewelry, pottery, glass from before Christ. Lovely gem! Stay until dusk and see the bats come out!

A nice museum, although small (the reviews calling it "underwhelming" may be a little harsh, but not too far off the mark). Suffered a bit from a lack of explanation for the exhibits, there is some but more would be helpful. The exhibits are mainly...More

The Archaeological Museum in Split is located a short walk out of the centre. It's not far, but you are unlikely to stumble across it unless you're out there looking for it. It consists of a garden outside which is filled with sculpture and a...More
