I had to go to this hospital to get a fish spine removed from my foot. After a 3 hour operation I was told ‘we couldn’t find the spine’ and have a letter from the hospital saying the spine was not there. The spine was SO CLEARLY in my foot, X-Rays from Hermano Pedro attached as evidence.

I was discharged with a prescription of painkillers for menstrual pain and some weak antibiotics. Needless to say in 3 days I had a severe infection and went back to the hospital for a check up. The nurse said it looked infected, i thought it was clearly infected, my incapable surgeon said it was not, with hubris.

I spoke to my insurance and a had a consultation with a virtual doctor who confirmed it was very infected. I was flown to Mexico City to a new hospital where I was told I had a severe infection and necrosis and might lose my foot. This was accounted to NUMEROUS faults by my surgeon at Hermano Pedro.

After 2 weeks in hospital fighting infection and recovering I’m now dealing with life long movement problems in my foot and am disgusted with the quality of service I received at Hermano Pedro

Hospital with a lot of history. They explain how great a human and such a good priest he was. Many locals come in from 6:00 am to a doctor's appointment. Have the tour in the afternoon when there are less people so you have more time to read and see their illustrative sculptures.

Did not know the history of this hospital, very touching. No the hospital is used as a facility when doctors come form all over the world to perform various surgeries. They do fantastic work.

If you are unfortunate enough to need a hospital while in Antigua, as my son was, this is the best hospital for care and cleanliness. The rooms are also large with televisions and there is a lovely little garden courtyard. Other than my son needing to be there, the only negative was the disinfectant disc hanging in the bathroom which had an incredibly strong and vile smell that permeated the entire room. Once I discarded this, it was fine. The hospital also supplies basic needs such as toothpaste & brush, shampoo, absorbent bath towel, bottled water.

Had a rapidly spreading infection from a cat bite(rec'd at home just before departure- thought it was ok!). The Hermano Pedro hospital was just a few blocks from where I was staying so went to the emergency room there..and spent the next 4 days on iv antibiotics as an inpatient. Wonderful care...the nurses, aides and physicians were very competent and caring...and the food was pretty good too! And the bill was a mere fraction of what a similar stay would have cost in the US.
And as for speaking English....well...it is Guatemala after all and Spanish is their language. My Spanish is passable and everyone tried very hard to communicate and make me comfortable.

This hospital is known to over charge travelers and any foreigners. They also have committed some very serious errors in treatment and expats who love in Antigua warn people away from this facility.

The attention was good. The rooms are clean.

The bill was very affordable. Nothing exagerated, it felt just fair.

Nothing to complain about. The whole experience was fine.

This hospital proved very serviceable and efficient in helping to diagnose and to rule out other causes of a medical problem experienced by myself and companion. Having contracted a samonella related condition in Nicaragua, we were sent here by an Antiguan doctor for blood work. Here we were able to receive a proper diagnosis and the recommended treatment from our doctor resulted in our eventual full recovery. This was in March of 2015! Staff does not speak English, although some few doctors might.

Brother Pedro was a Franciscan in the early 1600's, who served the very poor, ill, and disabled of the area. He actually went out and picked them up, and carried them back to his "hospital", where he cared for them to the best of his ability. Over the years, the ever-expanding facilities were damaged by earthquakes and taken over by different religious orders, but their mission has continued. Presently, it's comprised of a shelter for the abandoned and destitute, and several clinics staffed mostly by visiting medical teams offering free or low-cost services. Brother Pedro's actual tomb is located in San Francisco Church, a few blocks away. The hospital relies entirely on donations and volunteers. You can look around a little, but need to respect patients' privacy, and not get in the way. Very early on clinic days, as many as 100 people line up for help.
