It must have been something before time and earthquakes destroyed much of it. Now it's little more than an ornate facade, a few small chapels, and ruins. It sits in the main square.

Came to the ruins of Cathedral Antigua Guatemala early morning. It was once the largest and most lavishly decorated cathedral in Central America. It was huge and you can still see the supporting beams/structures of the cathedral.

The original church was built around 1541, but suffered several earthquakes in its history. The entrance to the cathedral is free but to enter the ruins from the side entrance is just 1 USD and worth of if. For me the cathedral is just average...More

The cathedral is located right on the main square. Behind the beautiful facade is a small chapel. And right behind that are the ruins of the main part of the original building which was destroyed by one of the earthquakes. Great for taking pictures. You...More

We appreciated being witness to the procession and ceremonies during Holy Week here. Had an unexpected wonderful experience of someone signing Ave Maria at the end of a ceremony.

Our guide gave us a superb insight into the history of this building and even the ruins are beautiful. While the arches and columns are still standing it is obvious that the fact that the roof caved in was the result of how it was...More

The Cathedral is in the centre of the Old Town, by the Main Square. The facade from the Square is beautiful but from the other side (entrance off 5a Calle Oriente) you can see the ruins of the original cathedral without a roof following earthquakes...More

Again, the city is rich with history and the architecture is amazing. The stories behind these churches is amazing. They are beautiful pieces of the times, the ways of life for the people of Antigua.

Surprisingly small for being in the center of town if features old art mainly focused around death and dying. This time of year has some lovely fruit-based altars on the floor well worth the effort to see.
