Spanish baroque architecture. Built some four centuries ago. Severely damaged in an earthquake in the early 1700s. It's still actively a church. Interesting history.

One of the most beautiful churches and ruins I have ever visited is San Francisco Church in Antigua.
Built in the 16th century, and severely damaged in the 1717 earthquake. It is one of the most visited churches in Antigua for its Spanish Baroque architecture, as well as shrine of Santo Hermano Pedro.

This church is visited by locals frequently to worship the shrine of Santo Hermano Pedro. The Franciscans constructed this church in 1579 when the one built earlier was severely damaged by earth quake. An expansion was done in later part of 16th century but again damaged in three earthquakes in the 17th century. A portion was reconstructed and the rest remain as ruins. Open from 6.00 am to 6.00 pm

This church is truly the church of the people. It is filled with the indigenous both on holy days but year as well. To see the Processional from this church during Semana Sancta is mystical, beautiful and never to be forgotten.
The tomb of St. Hermano Pedro is in a side chapel and he is revered by the poor as he devoted his life to them. There are two Hermano Pedro hospitals in Antigua: the largest in the center of town and for the destitute, the other west of the Mecado and is for profit.

This was the furthest walk from where we were on Calle Oriente 8. But we were trying to get in most of the churches put in by the different brothers.
