From my room at B&B Chez Daniel I had the most stunning view of Volcan de Agua-it's huge, imposing, threatening, looming, and beautiful! It hasn't erupted since the Pleistocene era, but can still produce debris flows and lahars. To me is one of the landmarks of Antigua-if you get lost, look for the volcano-that's south!

Although we were here in the rainy season, we had one day of absolute clear skies, with magnificent views of the volcano de Agua. I couldn’t take enough photos of the volcano. Combined with the colorful, picturesque streets of Antigua, this was a fantastic city to visit

Me, my wife, her friend and our guide were hiking down the Agua Volcano trail, when a masked man jumped out from behind a tree with a shotgun pointed at us and told us to put our heads down. We followed his orders, he was not interested in our belongings, only cash and cell phones. Only our guide had his cell phone on him and I handed him my cash and he left us alone and told us to hurry down the trail and to not speak to anyone about this.

About 30 minutes later, while still hiking down the trail, a man dressed as a police officer asked us if there was anyone else with us, we said no and did not report the incident to him. My wife's friend noted that there was another man dressed in police outfit sitting behind some bushes taking pictures of us. I did not see that but it was odd enough that we did not feel comfortable reporting the robbery to any local police, nor the local municipality tourism office when we arrived back at the village of Santa Maria de Jesus, which is where you park to start the hike.

The guide was a trustworthy guide we have used before, but he was not from the village.

We feel that the local police and the municipality/tourism office of Santa Maria de Jesus are working together regarding these robberies and we DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE HIKING THIS VOLCANO!

This volcano, together with three others remain a constant reminder to those that live there than one could erupt at any time!! Driving to Antigua you pass evidence of the last eruption where entire villages and their inhabitants were lost. Certainly picturesque from afar but I’d sure hate to be there when an eruption takes place

Agua Volcano looms as such a defining backdrop to the city. We thoroughly enjoyed our week in this beautiful city full of such wonderful people. We always used Agua Volcano as our directional landmark as we explored the city.

You can visit Agua, but you can experience it also from any vantage point in the city. It looms above the city of Antigua with majestic beauty. An earthquake and mudslide on Agua destroyed the Old City on its slopes, which was once the capitol city of Guatemala centuries ago. Then the capitol moved to Antigua for a while, until earthquakes destroyed it, and the capitol was moved to Guatemala city. Agua Volcano is dormant now, but it's classic stratovolcano shape attests to its violent past.

Had the opportunity to hike Auga. It was a beautiful day and we had a great time. 1/2 way up there is a place for a picnic lunch to get your energy recharged for the 2nd half which is a lot tougher. When we got to the top, we walked into the crater and slept for an hour. It took 6 hours to walk up and three hours to walk down. We went in March 2016 - It was not too hot and not too cold.

I climbed this summit from Santa Maria de Jesus, satrting at 6AM. The climb took 3:15 (this is a quite fast pace). The summit is, unfortunately, messed up with all sorts of communication gear - really cluttered. The descent took 2:10. Information and (possibly) guides can be obtained from the small tourist office located next to the main plaza (and church) in Santa Maria de Jesus.
