Amherst Cinema is a non-profit, independent theater. Our mission is to...

Amherst Cinema is a non-profit, independent theater. Our mission is to inspire, inform and entertain through the universal language of cinema arts and to serve as a cultural and educational resource for all. The core of our programming at Amherst Cinema is first-run independent film and classic repertory. We show over 120 superb films each year - most are first-run gems not even considered by commercial cineplexes. Decisions about film selection are made by our programming experts who know film and who know our audiences, not - as with many multiplex theaters - by a central office in a distant location. HISTORY 1926: The Amherst Theater opened in a renovated livery building in downtown Amherst, MA. It screened many classic films and hosted occasional stage performances. 1955: the theater was sold to Samuel Goldstein and renamed Amherst Cinema. Through the 1990s, the building deteriorated due to a lack of basic maintenance. The theater closed in 1999. 2000: a group of local film buffs and arts lovers formed the nonprofit Amherst Cinema entity to save the historic structure from the auction block. With substantial help from hundreds of individuals, institutions and businesses, the group raised funds and developed plans for a cinema center. 2006: With help from hundreds of supporters, we raised nearly $3,000,000 for the Amherst Cinema's home. In May 2006, our nonprofit organization broke ground to build a new, state-of-the-art, three-screen cinema. The Amherst Cinema opened November 22, 2006. 2013: A new studio theater was opened adjacent to the main building.

The films are amazing and the size of the film rooms are cozy with comfy seats. I most recently saw Moonlight there, for example, well before the acclaim. Honestly, though my favorite part of the cinema is the popcorn and snacks --- delicious popcorn with fun toppings. Natural soda, beer, wine. Just terrific, especially compared to a regular cinema chains!

I have lived many places, and this small theatre manages to get the very best films, and manages to show a number of films simultaneously each week. I joined after a year here, because they do great things in the community teaching kids about filmmaking. Membership also gets me a free ticket, another on my birthday, ticket discounts all year,... Amherst Cinema shines in its mission of showing independent films. It is a comfortable place with three theaters of different size, with the largest theater being the most comfortable. It is also well kept and still feels relatively new. The staff is friendly, although the front of house can get overwhelmed on Friday and Saturday nights. The only issues I... More

What a gem. Ticket people are nice and without attitude tho it's an art house great coffee and snacks as well as popcorn. And terrific movies including the Oscar shorts! Seats aren't bad either.

You can skip seeing the cookie-cutter movies that are at the big venues and go to this cinema. There are always interesting quirky movies. The prices are reasonable and you can get a glass of wine. Great place to spend a winter afternoon.

Good films. Audience is picky and seem to think they are special. Lack of consideration of others. Because of this, we rarely go to movies there any more. Sad to say this. It's our experience.

We have enjoyed many great films here over the years. The theaters are small and clean. In that, the seating is limited, I suggest you arrive a bit early to select a suitable seat choice. Unfortunately, the "seats" do not provide adequate leg room if you are the least bit tall. I think an upper row on the aisle is... More

Small theatre in the center of town that is the "artsy cinema". Shows great films. The theatre is small, and a bit "too small" sometimes. And they serve great craft beer!

So far, we have only gone to movies here so that is all I can comment on. The 3 theaters I am familiar with (they have 4) have all been very clean, very comfortable and have excellent visibility and acoustics. Their film choices include real dramas, biographies, suspense, adventures, and comedies that rely on intelligence, finesse, outstanding acting and great... More
