So beautiful!
Be ready to wait outside if you don't have a government ID. And there are guards with a metal detector between the door and the interior of the building.
No rain cover so bring an umbrella if it looks like rain.
The interior is SPECTACULAR and has wildlife exhibits in the "tunnel".
If you are touring State Capitol Buildings, don't miss our beautiful Maine State Capitol

Augusta Maine is a beautiful clean city that also is easy to get around in when touring. They have some beautiful buildings and the setting gorgeous.

We are visiting all state capitals- 29 down.
This was a comparatively easy visit- free parking close to the entrance and either a free tour or a do it yourself job.
Do check the Washington and Lincoln portraits.
An hour should do it here.

We stopped by for a quick visit and the staff were very friendly and took pictures for us behind the desk. Easy to navigate even though there were no formal tours.

Except for a couple of capitol police vehicles, the entire grounds were peculiarly deserted on a summer weekend mid-morning. The state archives/museum building was closed indefinitely. The Capitol building was closed tight as well, but only for the weekend. Its classically inspired architecture was grand and photogenic, but not grandiose. The buildings and grounds were well kept and appeared to be in good shape overall. On the grounds were: a Liberty Bell replica, a statue dedicated to Samantha Reed Smith, and a statue dedicated to the Civilian Conservation Corps. Free parking was in a big paved lot; a free parking garage was nearby. I liked all that I saw here; I disliked nothing. I only wished the archives/museum had been open.

We tried to go inside but due to pandemic it was closed to the public so it was disappointing to say the least.

I've always loved the State Capitol buildings and town halls in the South because their architecture is so elaborate and stunning, but Augusta's State Capitol runs a close second. It's very impressive, and the grounds and nearby Capitol Park are well maintained.

Augusta is sandwiched between Portland and Bangor but the state capital is quite beautiful. The State does a nice job maintaining the grounds and the capital is located on a hill. The building was built around 1832 and serves as a beacon for the community. While there is not too much to see in Augusta this is one building that is worth a stop.

One of the taller capitol buildings sits on a hill that offers great views of the area. It was a bit of a challenge to find parking, but nice to walk around and see the capitol.
