Interesting to see the remains of this 17th century church in the heart of the Old Town. It is known for the expansive unsupported flat arch in the interior.

Constructed in 1678, the Church & Convent of Santo Domingo was destroyed by fire in 1756. The remaining roofless skeleton is definitely worth viewing. Of particular interest is the interior “Arco Chato”, or “flat arch” which spans 49 feet at a height of 35 feet. Although the original flat arch fell in 2003, it has since been reconstructed. This unsupported stone archway has been considered an architectural marvel throughout the centuries and adds to the flavor of Casco Viejo.

Unbelievable to see church arch, the fire of 1756 burned all the woodwork and the church was not rebuilt - but the flat arch still stood. Unfortunately, the flat arch collapsed on Friday night, November 7, 2003 but it is has been reconstructed. So history is preserved and reconstructed.

Good that old structures like this can still exist for us to visit.

Great stories to enable appreciation of the colonial period.

Amazing and unexpected. A decent interpretive sign describing parts of the structure. Not the place to be if the Earth shakes even a little. No charge to enter and wander around.

Impressive ruins of the Church of Santo Domingo in Casco Viejo. Built in 1678 and destroyed by fire in 1781. Famous for its long-standing arch, Arco Chato. Both a haunting and a beautiful sight.

Strolling around the streets and seeing all this architecture is just beautiful. And of course it gives you plenty of photo opportunities.

The remains of this church are nicely preserved including the famous unsupported arch. It's a nice place to view and reflect when it's quiet.
