Really beautiful. We enjoyed looking at the art and different altars around the church. As a bonus, it is air conditioned!

The interior of the church has been beautifully restored and the air conditioning is a nice break from the mid-day heat outside. It is mostly opened for tourism, there is the chair that Pope Francis used during his 2019 visit to Panama.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Old Panama: A WALK INTO HISTORY

The Metropolitan Cathedral is not only it is the oldest church in Panama but it is one of the largest in Central America . Unfortunately on last two visits to Panama the Cathedral was closed for restoration. The Cathedral was reopened by Pope Francis during World Youth Day 2019. This Cathedral is beautiful example of colonial architecture in a classic Spanish style, the main part in stone flanked by two bell towers, seen in so many Latin America cities. The two towers framing the central facade are painted white and decorated with shells brought from the Las Perlas islands.
My niece Andrea and I spent some time inside the Cathedral admiring its beauty, treasures and learning more about its history. On entering the first thing to catch your eye is the beautiful massive altar in marble . Truly a magnificent work of art. The "huge golden candlesticks" at the altar are also quite impressive, so too are the stained glass windows depicting various saints . I was especially drawn to a statue of Jesus with child-like cherub heads clustered about his feet. I learned too that there are graves under the floor that are opened once a year. Among the various religious figures that adorn the Cathedral are a statue of Santa María La Antigua, the patroness of Panama, with a flower in her hand and Baby Jesus in her arms.
These are some photos taken during our visit . We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this, beautiful historic Cathedral.....

Since I was staying in Casco Viejo, it was a logical stop along the way one day. The interiors are far more attractive than that of the exterior, so don’t let the outside fool you.

Going inside this Cathedral was a beautiful church to spend some time in to enjoy the beauty. and to think about the age of it being built and the history behind it all.

The outstanding facade of weathered stone flanked by two gleaming-white towers immediately attracts the eye, and the interior is not without interesting details. Very much worth a look.

This is a large cathedral located in the central plaza of the casco viejo.

It is free to enter although a donation is encouraged.

Its air conditioned inside.

The church is actually a ongoing place of worship and one should be respectful when visiting. It does feature a well designed stations of the cross exhibit.

One of the many stops as part of a tour of the Casco Viejo

Awesome church located next to the plaza. While the inside is better looking than the outside; the outside has character. Well worth going into, plus it is free.

Located in the center of the historic and beautiful Casco Viejo. The exterior of the Cathedral and it's location at the Plaza de la Independencia is more interesting than the interior. However, free admission and definitely worth a look inside.
