It was difficult. to walk to this church as both sides of the small street leading to to it have vendors selling their stuffs. In addition there are motor vehicles driving by plus carts of goods being pushed,

At the center of the altar is a statue of Jesus hanging up on a cross. There are two side altars with religious
statues. I soid my prayers here and braved my way back to my hotel.

The Calvary Church is one of the oldest churches which represent the gothic styles of the buildings around such as the National Palace, National Library etc.

We was in mid town at mid day an decided to go inside this iglesia. Typically catholic, but not so awfull decorated as you often can see it in catholic churches. Nice silent place in the busy town. And do not worry. At mid day San Salvador is no worse than other big towns. Take precautions, do not look like a million and you will be OK.

We had a short stopover in San Salvador and hired a cabbie to take us to see some of the sights for a few hours. This was on of the places that he took us too and it was very lovely.

Looked interesting from the outside but was closed. Not sure if this is permanent or if it only opens when there is a mass. Worth a stroll by if in the downtown area.

This church is located downtown. Bad news: the vendors have taken over downtown San Salvador and it is NOT SAFE to go there. But, we did, middle of the day, and kept our cameras in our bookbags, out of sight. Fortunately, the police were out in full force and we felt fairly safe the entire time we were walking through the vendors. Inside the church is spectacular. Gothic style, absolutely beautiful and well worth the chance we took getting to it.

This church stands in chaotic downtown San Salvador like an illusion among hundreds of street vendors selling any kind of foods, magic potions, sport goods, pirate DVDs, exotic fruits and anything you may imagine. If you are brave enough you may visit it and find a contrasting peaceful and serene place, just the opposite to the post nuclear feel of the surroundings. It has a beautiful neo gothic style. Its gray walls and colorful stained windows just adds to the mysterious surreal experience. There are many altars inside. They where beautifully sculpted in Italy from Carrara marble. I recommend visiting this church along with El Rosario for a interesting visit in downtown San Salvador.

Huge structure that looks abandoned and in disrepair when closed. Gates and doors are shut until 2PM when locals come in for reflection and prayer. It is my favorite of the downtown churches, reflecting the more traditional ornate Catholic art and icons of an earlier period. The big bonus is that it is at a cross-roads of long and very crowded street markets, selling everything from wheelbarrows of green peppers to sneakers to cell phones, with a gritty and entertaining cacophony as you move from block to block.
