The former Kachkovskii-Makovsky hospital (also known as Makovsky Clinics) was established in 1907-1908 by Associate Professor of the St. Vladimir University (presently Taras Shevchenko University in Kyiv), MD, PE Kachkovskii as a private surgical clinic. Two years later, after the death of Kachkovskii, the clinic was taken over by his colleague and co-worker, I.S. Makovsky, under whose direction it began to operate in 1910. At that time the clinic was famous for possessing the latest and most advanced equipment, and was designed for the treatment of wealthy clients only. This hospital is first of all known these days because it was precisely here that the Russian Prime Minister Pyotr Stolypin, who arrived to Kyiv for the opening of the monument to Alexander II and was deadly wounded in the building of the Kyiv Municipal Theatre (presently the National Opera of Ukraine) died from his wounds. The best medical luminaries gathered in Kyiv in Makovsky clinics to save Stolypin, but they failed. In the year of his death the street was renamed to Stolypin, and the clinic became known as "Stolypin house".The clinic was severely damaged by fire during the World War II. But as early as in 1948 its building, which is a rare example of Art Nouveau architecture in Kyiv – was restored. In Soviet times, it hosted the Ophthalmic Hospital and other health facilities. Since 1998, the building is occupied by the headquarters of "The People's Movement of Ukraine" – Narodny Rukh political party. But it is open to visitors (for free) every day – one of the rooms (former surgery room) now houses the Cabinet-Museum of Vyacheslav Chornovil (the founder of Narodny Rukh).
